The United States Coast Guard describes the undertaking as “...one of the greatest in the history of the U.S. Coast Guard (“Bernard C. Webber, USCG”, 1).” The United States Coast Guard is a merger of five Federal agencies that were once independent, but with overlapping responsibilities. These agencies are the Revenue Cutter Service, the Lighthouse Service, the Steamboat Inspection Service, the Bureau of Navigation, and the Lifesaving Service ("U.S. Coast Guard History", 1). Since this is the case, one might think there are many other great rescues which could top the SS Pendleton, however this rescue is one of the best in both the past and present.
