Coast Guard Compare And Contrast

Aquatic Defense The United States has a few branches of the military. They all have important jobs that make them unique, but they also all have similarities. Two branches that are often debated are the Navy and the Coast Guard. The United States Navy and the United States Coast Guard have been said to be the same branches by some, and completely different by others. I found that the Navy and the Coast Guard are actually not too similar but both are very unique and important, although the Navy serves a greater purpose in my opinion. After my research, I found that the United States Navy is larger than the United States Coast Guard. It has 325,000 active members, 107,000 reserve members, 272 deployable combat ships, and 3,700 air crafts in active service. The Navy is a “war fighting force”. It consists of 43,000 active members, 8,000 reserves, 1,600 vessels, and 204 fixed rotary wing air crafts. The Coast Guard doesn’t leave the U.S. so they stay in the United States water territory at all times. They are responsible for defending the coastal borders of the United States from drug runners or unidentified boats. The Coast Guard is thought of as a law enforcement branch because they work very closely with the FBI, but in times of war their status is changed from law enforcement to military and they are used in war as a secondary Navy. The Coast Guard is also used as a coastal search and rescue team. If someone gets stuck out at sea the Coast Guard has the responsibility of helping them. The only time the Coast Guard will discharge their firearms is to stop an unyielding boat and they only aim for the engine to disable the boat after they give warning shots.
