On January 21, 1961, President-elect John F. Kennedy delivered his now famous inaugural address to millions of anxious Americans as they patiently waited for a glimpse into the vision that Kennedy held for the United States. In a dramatic attempt to galvanize the nation and usher in a new era, Kennedy boldly proclaimed "And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you¬¬¬¬- ask what you can do for your country". Without question, there are hundreds of compelling reasons for anybody to want to attend an institution with the amazing pedigree of the Coast Guard Academy. But for me personally, whenever I think about the real reason why I desire to attend the Academy, my thoughts always come back to the basis of Kennedy's quote.

My ultimate goal from attending the Academy would be to look in the mirror at the end of the four years and see a man who has grown physically stronger, mentally wiser, and morally cleaner than the seventeen year old who is currently typing this essay. To transform this goal from a pipe dream to a reality would take a tremendous amount of hard work and diligence. However, despite my many shortcomings, these two traits are something that I possess with abundance. After initially struggling to adapt to the physicality and technique of travel and varsity soccer, I came to the brutal conclusion that I will never possess the talent or skill that many of my competitors contain. I realized that in order to close the talent divide that stretched before me, I was going to have to outwork my competitors in every possible way. Four years later, after spending hours upon hours practicing both in the gym and on the field, I am proud to say that I am a all-conference soccer player for the second year in a row. Regardless of what the future holds, I am confident that I will succeed thanks to the hard working values that my family and country have instilled in
