History Speech – Coal Seam Gas

Introduction: (Intro to CSG/What are the two sides?)

Good morning,
I am here to advise you on the coal seam gas development and the issues surrounding it.

Now what, what is Coal seam gas. Well coal seam gas also commonly known as CSG is a natural gas that is produced and trapped underground by water and ground pressure. The gas is harvested and extracted by drilling vertically into the ground, until a gas deposit is reached. The suppliers of CSG earns millions of dollars as it accounts for 90% of Queensland’s natural gas supply and 17% of the state’s electricity. (What are the two sides?) However, most people think that this is great and want it to keep going, but what’s the issue? And why is it an issue?

Firstly, one of the main positives to CSG mining, is that it is a cleaner energy source. In a country worried about their greenhouse gas emissions, mining for coal seam gas seems like the sensible option. Comparing CSG to coal, gas emits 50 – 70% less greenhouse gases than coal does, which is a significant difference to its ‘dirtier’ counterpart. An investigation conducted by Fleming and Measham’s of economic outcomes related to the CSG industry across southern Queensland found that between 2001 – 2011, areas with coal seam CSG development showed higher income growth than other areas without. Which, overall boosts the economy and aids in the development of the area where it is situated. A range of studies operated by the Government, shows strong evidence that the growth of the CSG industry provided increases in employment in the area. Furthermore, economic data from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office shows that the unemployment in our focused region, the Surat basin, displays that the unemployment rate in the large area of the basin has decreased from 5.9 to 3.1% between the 2001 and 2011 census. This boost in jobs can also be seen in the Bowen basin region, which covers 160,000km2 has also decreased from 4.3 – 2.2% in the same time period. All of these statistics and facts can be trusted as they originate from a Federal Government publication. If the facts suggest that coal seam gas mining can be positive and negative, what can the Federal Government and Queensland Government do to ensure a better state and

He states that making healthier options for our planet will not only affect the wellbeing of Earth but humans as well. Expressing that the upsurge in carbon dioxide particles in our atmosphere; he provides ways that we could regulate that issue for our health. Patz records the productive impact that his solutions have made on principle Australian cities. His findings will help provide evidence for the solution of climate change; and what small changes citizens can do to help.…

The United States of America leads the world in the production of natural gas. President Obama stated that the economic future for America will be fueled in large part by vast amounts of natural gas in his 2012 State of the Union Address. What the President failed to mention is how the process of hydraulic fracturing is effecting not only our environment but the lives of everyday Americans. Currently the Marcellus play is the largest operational shale play operating in the United States. This shale formation is proving to be full of wealth in resources enriched with petroleum and natural gas.…

Since the beginning of the coal mining industries in the 1800s, thousands of mines have been created, extracting the precious mineral, and then dumped, empty and hollow. Once industries finished with a certain area, it would be dropped and they would move on, drilling in another location. The act of reclaiming these mines did not come to light until 1977 when the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act was passed by Congress after they saw the disruption in the environment. This act put a strain on the profits of many coal mining industries, such as Peabody Energy and Alpha Natural Resources. Now, Peabody Energy and Alpha Natural Resources wrongly reclaim their retired mines as a way to protect their profits, doing the bare minimum of reclamation.…

A recent study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Opposing Viewpoints, monitoring gas wells in Weld County, Colorado, estimated that 4 percent of the methane produced by these wells is escaping into the atmosphere. The only way to stop climate change is to stop burning fossil fuels, not dig more up. Through air pollution, water contamination, and improper disposal of waste products, this type of drilling is causing great harm. Since they starting practicing “fracking”, there have…

I am writing in concern of the recent release of your proposed energy policies for your upcoming term as president. I have gathered from the press release that the main goal of your plan is to lessen the US’s dependence on foreign fuels and gain access to the untapped wealth of natural resources in our country by increasing the amount of energy jobs for americans. You intend to accomplish this goal by approving the Keystone Pipeline, removing barriers on renewable energies, cancelling the Paris Agreement and many other ambitious policies. And while some of these ideas you present are quite viable, there are others- including the removal of barriers on fracking and pursuance of nuclear energy- that I must advise you to reconsider. Mr. Trump, I urge you to reconsider your policy…

In many people’s minds, the term “Fracking” only applies to the controversial extraction process and the environmental impact surrounding that process. Hydraulic Fracturing or “Fracking” for short is a process where chemicals and water are injected into wells to breakup rock formations that have gas or oil trapped in the rock itself. This process is specifically used for developing and extracting oil and natural gas from shale. While most people have heard the term “Fracking”, very few understand or even consider the down the road steps required to transfer, process and transport the fuel once it has been extracted or the implications and environmental or health impacts that follows in its wake. While fracking is currently banned in New York State and much of the New England area, those states still play a part in getting the fuel to export markets such as Canada or overseas.…
