When Coach Chris Wayne accepted the job as an assistant men’s basketball coach of the North East Arizona Sand Vipers, he was unaware that the job would come with a bunch of snakes in the grass. Coach Wayne was a high profile Division II coach but knew that if he wanted his coaching to take the next step he knew that he would have to move on to the Division 1 ranks. John Locke was the head coach of the Sand Vipers when Jack Hume (athletic director) decided he would bring in Wayne. Locke soon realized that this assistant coach, which athletic director John Hume brought in was a preview of what would come after the post-Locke era at North East Arizona.

Coach Wayne and Coach Hare were approaching the process fairly differently. Coach Hare made it known that Means would be a huge deal on campus and have several “benefits” where Coach Wayne told the family that the Sand Vipers would utilize Means and make him a better player at the same time. It became clear to Coach Wayne that Coach Hare had been talking to the Derek in a way to make it seem like he would get special treatment. Coach Wayne was aware of what was going on but did not know how to react, being that he was still new and unsure he kept to himself for the remainder of the trip. Wayne was also considered about going to the AD if he had little evidence, it could appear that he would be wanting to stir something up to benefit him in the long run. Days had passed with no problems between the Coach Hare and Coach Wayne, this made Coach Wayne think that he was overthinking and maybe over reacting to the whole situation.
