He could connect with students by instilling confidence and a deeper gratitude for the items we have. He constantly reminded us the contrasting lives that we have, and those in less fortunate circumstance be it a lack of resources, loss of limbs, or even unviable parental influence. He was also the type of individual that at the end of each year would persuade students with any unused or outgrown clothes to be donated for charity. He possesses characteristics that I, and many others envy with his strong-willed determination, upholding only the most honorable principles, and containing ambitions with endless expanding desires. What most people do not acknowledge is that being an instructor is a difficult position. Especially considering stress is a prime factor for instructors quitting within their first 5 years of teaching. I was under the impression I had witnessed every variation of a teacher until I met Gardner. I knew he upheld himself to a higher standard. He demonstrated this through his actions. Never becoming hubris when introducing proper form for workout routines, forthright to the class if lacking an answer to a presented question, and stooping down to students demands. However, there’s a trait that becomes essential in creating a successful relationship with a student, and that’s empathy. Empathy becomes an important factor when dealing with students as a result from the diverse backgrounds that they encounter daily. Students begin to project their situations from their personal lives, and it is important for an instructor to be able to assess those problems when they arise. I would have to describe Gardner as nothing, but the epitome of being empathetic. Students suffering from weight issues would often visit him privately discuss because they tested poorly on mandatory physical testing he would begin to concentrate on that student and would push them to exceed their limit. He strives for nothing, but the best for his students and refuses to allow them to become another victim of indolence. Sports has played a large role in his life molding the character he is today, he tries to incorporate this lifestyle into his workout to entice a favorable feedback where every student is able to
