Case Study
Coach Foyer is the head coach of a division 1 football team at the University of Miami. The football team has been doing exceptionally well throughout the season and is looking forward to the big championship game. They are a favorite to win the game, and the team is looking forward to the new uniforms and equipment as well as a $100,000 prize if they win. The semester just recently ended and final grades were posted to a “Staff Only” website. On this website, teachers can post grades of their students, however it is password protected. Coaches are granted access to view this site in order to check player’s grades and make sure they meet the grade qualifications to play-- however coaches are not given passwords to edit the site. One night after practice, Coach Foyer is checking the site and discovers that David completely failed his biology final which brought his cumulative average two points below what the requirement is to play. Joseph also played football at the University of Miami 7 years ago and was named an “honorary coach” for his contributions to the team. Since he is the Dean of the department, Joseph holds all of the passwords to the site. Coach Foyer and Joseph often meet and have lunch together. The day after Coach Foyer finds out about David, he goes to Joseph’s office for their daily lunch break and notices he isn’t back from a meeting yet. While waiting for him to return, Coach Foyer realizes that the computer was left on the site where the teachers post student’s final grades. With the championship game in mind, Coach Foyer quickly scrolls down to David’s name and changes his cumulative grade to the minimum required to play. He rationalizes this by assuming no one will notice the slight difference in a grade among many others. He returns to the home page and sits in the chair until Joseph returns for
