Clunie reid is a London based artist, trained as a painter in both her undergrad and her MA , she now creates still and moving image work from found imagery. Reid became interested in imagery upon graduating and thus moved away from the abstract forms she had been dealing with previously through painting. Reid is interested in advertisement and the body. She mentioned during her talk that she was particularly interested in the use of the body in advertisement i.e. how the body becomes an image, which is to be sold. Reid challenges todays cultural idea of beauty, often using imagery from advertisement and pop culture magazines such a heat and hello. She features allot of images of celebrity’s. Reid is also interested in the exaggerated representation of emotions, like you would see on cartoon figures which are again often used in advertisement. This links to her interest of using the body in advertisement as it uses facial expressions to sell an emotion. She often looks for images in a transitional state. Reid employs a degraded de skilled approach to her work. She purposely uses cheap materials like gaffer tape black marker low detail digital programming. “Your higher plane awaits, 2010 Tate Britain, London” this title came from an advertisement for art college, which again shows Reid’s engagement with the advertisement which goes on around her. Reid embraces a deskilled approach encouraging camera glare and digital high-up’s from using programs which are not intended to be used together. Rather than scanning in images into the computer she decides to photograph the images, this in turn means that the images is of lower quality.. All of these aspects create an almost painterly approach to a photographic print, which is atmospheric and
