Similarities And Differences Between Emma And Clueless

Emma, a novel written by Jane Austen, and Amy Heckerling 's high school drama, Clueless, are very comparable and alike, even though they were created at very different times. Emma was created in 1816 and has a lot old fashioned issues relating to that time, and Clueless, created in 1995, has the same issues only modernized. The movie Clueless has many similar conflicts and ideas like the novel, Emma, for instance, character similarities, attempted matchmaking between the characters, character development and relationships, and as well as some differences. Throughout Clueless, it was simple to detect the similarities between the characters of those in the novel Emma. Cher Horowitz, the main character in Clueless, lives in the wealthy …show more content…
In the beginning of the movie, Cher started out as materialistic and out of touch with reality. She was more interested in other people 's relationship rather than her own personal relationships. Later, Cher became less prying and more wiser after recognizing her feelings for Josh. In Emma, Emma started out as immensely vain and enjoyed meddling in other people 's affairs. Later in the novel, Emma discovers that her disposition and mentality were not really necessary; she realized this when she acknowledged her feelings for Mr. Knightley. Both Cher and Emma transformed from inquisitive and meddlesome to benevolent and altruistic. In Clueless, Tai was a delinquent and was extremely desperate for a love interest. Cher and Dionne helped transform her into a sassy, attractive woman to help her get the boy who is of a higher caliber. She was first interested in Travis, and ended up with him at the end of the movie. In Emma, Harriet was conservative and dull. She turned down a proposal from Mr. Martin but soon realized that it was a mistake, so she married him. Tai and Harriet are not much alike, but do have the same issues and they both fell in love with the men who they turned down in the beginning. The characters in Clueless and Emma experienced some dynamic changes and perceived their true self and who they were intended to be …show more content…
One of the main differences was the time period. Clueless was made in 1995 and Emma was written in 1816. Due to this, the problems that they dealt with in everyday life were mostly different. Clueless was less formal and very casual in behavior and language while Emma was very formal and conservative. For example, in Clueless, there was a use of a cellphone and a use of letters in Emma to communicate. There were updated and more relatable features in Clueless rather than Emma. Cher was sixteen years old and Emma was twenty-one, so there is a difference in maturity between the two as well as how they handle situations regarding their personal lives. Clueless was more about high school students and their teenage drama while Emma had more of a mature theme about finding the right person to marry. Another difference was when Churchill was having an affair with Jane Fairfax. Mr. Churchill was portrayed as Christian in Clueless. In Emma, Churchill was having a secret engagement to Jane Fairfax while dating Emma. However, in Clueless, there was no character who was portrayed as Jane Fairfax. Instead while Emma was dating Christian, she realized that he was a homosexual. Cher later became good friends with him and realized they are very much alike, she even said that, " he loves shopping almost as much as I do." There were many obvious differences between Clueless and Emma, but these were the

As conveyed by the title “Clueless” it is Cher’s cluelessness that makes her fill the role of Emma Woodhouse so brilliantly, both attractive, wealthy, clever yet clueless when it comes to love. Set in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles with lavish mansions, manicured lawns and shopping malls, Clueless could hardly be more different from Emma’s world at Highbury, England with its country houses, pastoral countryside and village shops but, both places represent a life of privilege. Cher’s social life consist of wild parties, peers who take part in recreational drug use and shopping as a means to relax, bearing little resemblance to Emma’s social universe of dinner parties, well organised, elegant balls and refreshing walks through the country side. (Macdonald 213) Even though their worlds and lifestyles are completely different, one can still see how Cher is an interpretation of a modern day Emma. And if Cher is the perfect fit to Emma the viewer cannot help but compare Josh to Mr Knightly,…

Why Tai!? Do you know who my father is?” In defense, the movie depicts society’s inclusiveness and pluralism by including Dionne’s Afro-Americanism, and the prevalence of varied ethnic groups such as the Asian, and Middle Eastern extras. A far shot of a blinking neon sign of a clown dwarfs Cher as she is ditched in the carpark by Elton, symbolizing society’s derision and condemnation of her attempts to emasculate a defined systems of classes and cliques. Further inflexibility in class interactions is apparent in Emma’s high modality and contemptuous tone when she claims that the “the yeomanry are precisely the order of people… with whom I feel I can have nothing to do.”…

However, Aristotle 's quote is ironic considering it is the best resemblance of Anse Bundren, the father and antagonist, of the novel. English literature is very diverse but one of the most important parts of it is the English novel. The English novel was born in the first half of the 18th century with a fictional vibe. Then at the beginning of the 19th century, “it is with Jane Austen that the novel takes on its distinctive modern character in the realistic treatment of unremarkable people in the unremarkable situations of everyday life”, (Southam). Austen is considered one of the best writers in all history. She wrote a bunch of novels such as: Pride & Prejudice which is one of the first romantic comedies in the history of the novel, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Persuasion, among others.…
