I am currently a part of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Inc. This an educational sorority that is run by educators in the surrounding area near me. In this organization we have presentations on financial aid, life skills, and anything that the members of the organization need. Not only do we have presentations but we have community service activities available throughout the year.…
One experience that shaped my character as a person was my part-time job in high school. I worked as tour guide in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Being a tour guide pushes a person to be open minded and curious about other people. I remember having a tour group from New York City, and we had a great conversation when we were comparing our respective Chinatowns. The conversation had me continuously think of questions and reply to their question with an answer to the best of my ability.…
During the following summer the soon to be Peer Mentors has a trip to go up to Julian, CA so I went. To my surprise, I was one of the few guys there so it was an awkward experience. During the trip we did bonding activities to get to know everyone and become one big family. We also learned different strategies to help fellow peers and learned to also deal with my awkwardness significantly.…
Why do you want to be an officer in the SHS Beta Club? Before Junior year, and before being able to join the Beta Club, I have had the urge to reach out and experience new things. I feel that Beta Club will provide me with some vital experiences that will benefit me during the rest of my high school year and thereafter. The people that I will meet during these experiences are also something that I look forward to.…
I am doing my volunteer hours at an organization called Red River Human Services Foundation. This foundation is focused on helping people with disabilities. I am working alongside a caseworker, or a social worker. They provide support to people with developmental disabilities. Creating goals, making a plan according to their client’s needs, and maintaining financial abilities is just some of the things that a caseworker does in their day.…
She was more than happy to let me join the group. To my surprise, there was not too many people that attended the meeting that day. There was a total of seven people including me at the beginning of the meeting. The leader introduced me as a student to the rest of the individuals in the meeting. The group while quiet at first welcomed me as part of the group.…
The subculture I chose is the FFA which is also known as the future farmer organization. I started in this organization when I was a sophomore in high school. The organization starts in the middle school and goes into high school. My high school isn’t big on FFA, so I had to find out through a mutual friend. When I started in this club I didn’t know what to except so I was shy at first and didn’t volunteer for activates as much as I should have.…
The 12 step meeting that I attended was an over eaters anonymous. When I arrived, I was greeted openly and the people were very friendly. I had to announced who I was and the purpose of me being there. I was surprise that I was accepted as part of the group. The group had given several pamphlets and invited me to attend their weekly meetings.…
Vincent Van Gogh once said, “How can I be useful, of what service can I be? There is something inside me, what can it be?” In life, one usually seeks their great purpose and of what use they can possibly be to the world. Since a child, I have always wanted to be able to create an impact in the lives of others around me. I always dreamt of being remembered in an honorable way because of the difference I know I could make in people's lives.…
I observed an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) group in Paterson, NJ, which is a self-help group that helps alcoholics in the recovery and treatment phase. It’s an open group for anyone who wants to change their drinking habits. They have the meeting every Friday at 7:30 pm. There’s no specific qualifications to attend this group. No age limit, specific race, or education is required to become a member.…
When I first heard we could volunteer at a wildlife facility, I was definitely considering doing the project instead, because of my fear of animals. As I realized that the TWRC would be way easier in the long run than doing research and a project, I decided to take on the challenge of volunteering. The TWRC’s volunteer program and numerous activities that you can sign of for is quite the experience for any and every one. During my time as a volunteer I learned a lot about the TWRC and the animals it cares for. I chose to volunteer as a busy bee, which is assigned to do the general maintenance and cleaning up around the facility.…
My hopes for the Freshman Retreat aren’t much. I wish to connect with the people in my advisory, make new friends become acquainted with more people in my grade. I have had a few friends over the past few weeks, but I would say that we aren’t good enough friends to be considered best friends yet. The best way to really get to know people is to live with them for a few days. That way, you share everything together and become better friends as a result.…
My experience in COMM 2367 this semester was an important one for not only my educational career but for my life after the classroom. It helped me reconnect with the task of group work, helped me overcome my fear of public speaking, and much more that I will be discussing through this reflection paper. This communication class did not only help me complete a second writing course but also helped me learn how to use persuasion tactics in a writing and a speaking fashion. I have learned that persuasion is used in multiple different forms.…
I always embraced the opportunity involve myself in co-curricular events as it provides me with an opportunity to engage with students outside of a classroom teacher, and involve myself with their lives outside of the usual teacher/student setting. By understanding a student outside of the classroom, I feel that I can better understand them and can create quality teaching and learning experiences from this. Reflection on my teaching is vital to my development. My Professional Development Plan has been invaluable to my ability to improve my teaching, and I have always received positive feedback from my supervisors. I have also taken the opportunity to mentor pre-service teachers to reflect on my teaching and learning.…
My project began as a way for me to give back to the community in a way in which I could use my strengths to inspire and teach. Some of the reasons why I began my journey here at J. K. Lee were to become more assertive, responsible, disciplined, and self-confident. These were qualities that held me back from reaching my full potential. I wanted to incorporate these skills into my project and challenge myself in new and different directions.…
