Throughout my fifteen year tenure with the group, I have been able to perform at various different venues around Oregon such as universities, elementary/middle schools, the Oregon State Fair, and at cultural events. I will continue to remain active in the group because it has allowed me to mature and personally develop at an accelerated pace. It has allowed me to share my Hispanic heritage with others and to take pride in my culture. Subsequently, I have contributed an immense amount of time and energy into the project. I have taken part in the program since the age of three and I now serve as a leader, mentor, and dance instructor for the younger children within the group. "Why are you in LASO?" and "Isn't that club for Mexicans?" are the two questions I get asked frequently. At my school, Leo and Key service clubs have always been very popular with many prospects each year. Due to my school consisting of fifty-one percent Hispanics, I was particularly interested in the Hispanic and Latino culture. Thus, instead of trying out for the popular clubs, I decided to join the Latin American Student Organization (LASO). Being a Chinese male, I had trouble fitting in with the fellow members as I did not speak Spanish or have knowledge of their culture.…

One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

I’m Mexican, I was born in Mexico but then brought over here to the US when I was around 3 years old. My whole family was born in Mexico and I’m the youngest child which means that all of my brothers and sister grew up for most of their childhood in Mexico and my oldest sister even got married over there. We eventually all moved over here and that resulted in our family being very culturally connected with Mexico’s culture. My mother is a strong believer in continuing cultural traditions even if we are in a different place. So she made sure we always knew a lot about where we came from or special traditions that were done in Mexico.…

“When your music begins, you will be in competition mode.” I took a deep breath, it was showtime. I was introduced to the world of competitive dance in August of 2011 and ever since, dance has been the outlet for all of my emotions. As time elapsed, I persevered through challenging ten hour practices and the taunting of my peers.…
