Clowning Behavior Case Study

Juan is a second grader that has been experiencing chronic misbehaviors daily in the classroom. He is the oldest of three children. The youngest is a newborn. A few of the behaviors observed that could be possibly caused by the stress of a newborn in the house are sucking his thumb as well as screaming and crying a t drop off time. To help eliminate this behavior teacher should encourage family to set aside a few extra minutes at drop off so the Juan can have a little one on one before starting his day. Juan has a difficult time interacting with his peers indoors and outdoors. Pairing him up with a special buddy may encourage positive interactions between him and other children in the class. This behavior is a call out for some sort of help. The child that is clowning could possibly be undergoing some sort of stress that they are trying to hide or cover up. If a child finds the work they have in front of them too difficult they may result to clowning to avoid doing the task. Talking to the clowning child is the first step in finding out what are the reasons for this behavior. Also observe for patterns of the clowning behaviors that can be reported back to child. Many times teacher is receiving the message of disrespect from a child because they are not looking at them when they are talking but is in fact it could be the child’s culture not to look into the adult’s eyes as they speak (Gootman, 2008 p. 150). Just as with adult interaction if the two individuals feel respected than chances are they will give respect. When deciding what is respectful and what is disrespectful we must learn individual cultures. Using the “I” statement when communicating can help when talking things out while advising the child of the expected behaviors in school will teach the child the difference between home culture and school
