Any fashion trend or sense of style can determine an era or a certain year. The Elizabethan Era, which was during the 16th century was a period in which a person was known for what they were wearing. You would know who a person was based on their clothing. Their clothing was used to emphasize fashion sense, personal rank, and social stature. The sense of fashion always depended upon a person’s choice. The women were seen wearing big dresses. The bodice was tight fitting and the skirt was big and wide. “The wealthy people were known because of the colors they wore. The colors they wore were equal to velvet, dark green, and white. However, the lower class would wear dull colors. The colors they wore were similar to brown, black, and white. Their dresses were usually composed of loose fabrics. Their dresses would also sometimes be torn” (Drea Leed). The fabrics that the women would make their dresses out of were usually rough looking and not soft. The women of higher class would wear very restricting dresses. Meanwhile, the women of lower class would wear loose fitting gowns and dresses. The men of higher class would wear tight pants and loose fitting shirts and usually would wear riding boots as well. However, the men of the lower class, they would wear loose pants and loose shirts. Just like in wealthy families, the children of lower class families would wear clothes similar to that of their parents. The little girls of lower class families would wear loose fitting dresses made of loose fabrics. The little boys of lower class families would also wear loose fitting pants along with a loose fitting shirt. The men’s clothes were also usually paired with big work boots. The men would also wear vests. The fabric of the vests were composed of the fabrics similar to that of the women’s dresses. The clothing during the Elizabethan Era was unique in its own way. While try to interpret this style today, nothing compares to the style of the 16th century. From that period to today, many styles have been influenced in order to keep the fashion industry going.
