A short story is usually a focussed narrative that presents a few characters involved in a compelling plot (site text book). Short story writers are unique in that they do not have the luxury of describing their characters and settings at length. Instead, they rely on elements such as narration, character’s action, symbolism, and even a character’s clothing to give the reader a better understanding of the character’s personality. In short stories such as “Miss Brill,” “Everyday Use,” and “Chrysanthemums” the writers chose to use clothing to help develop their character’s personality.

On her return, Dee wore a yellow and orange dress described as so loud it hurt her mother’s eyes. She wore earrings that hung to her shoulders and a collection of noisy bracelets. This African attire showed Dee’s interest in her African roots. Dee also aspired to be sophisticated and this was reflected in her clothing. Since she was a young girl, Dee wanted the best of things and as a teenager was very stylish opting to wear a yellow organdy dress to her high school graduation. Dee thought her sophistication and the fact that she always got what she wanted made her special enough to deserve her mother’s quilts. She is in search of something personal; something to which she feels connected, as she references the quilts being “….pieces of dress Grandma used to wear.” (Walker 320). In the beginning of the story, Dee is presented as an individual who is embarrassed of her history, as well as her family. The changing of her name is very significant, as it shows her to have now embraced who she is, and where she comes from. The quilts give Dee the chance to reconnect with something she has always been ashamed of, and even wanted to keep hidden, her…

She wants to be able to show people how far out of the ashes she has risen to her successful station in life. Dee’s desire to use the old quilts for decoration rather than for everyday use shows a major misunderstanding on her part. The historical and familial value of the quilts does not come from looking at them, but from continuing to use them and repair them. “Dee views her heritage as an artifact which she can possess and appreciate from a distance instead of as a process in which she is always intimately involved” (Piedmont-Marton, 45). Dee’s aloof attitude about her family history comes from her sense that she has succeeded in life and is now distinguished from her humble…

Modernism means “integrity; it means honesty; it means the absence of sentimentality and the absence of nostalgia; it means simplicity; it means clarity.” This quote by Paul Rand demonstrates the bias towards modernism. However, there are pros and cons for both traditionalism and modernism. While traditionalism holds to conventional morals and ideas, modernism explores new concepts and leaves room for imagination. This is shown by the vaccine controversy, the short story “Everyday Use," and women’s roles throughout history.…

Instead she comes off as thinking she is of a higher status than her family, most likely because of her education and the fact that she is “lighter than Maggie, with nicer hair, and a fuller figure” (Walker 330). Colorism is a huge matter in the African American community, and has been for years. A lot of the time people prefer Black people with light skin with bouncy curls that look similar to the loops on roller coasters over Black people with dark skin and curls that do not look as “professional.” Dee’s attitude towards her family shows…

Dee even viewed some of the everyday tools that her Mother used for practicality as show pieces and decorations. She asked her mother to give her a milk churn and quilts made by her grandmother to decorate her new home, but she didn’t plan on using the milk churn to make milk or to use the quilts to stay warm, she wanted to use the items as decorations. “Miss Brill”, written by Katherine Mansfield, is the somber short story of loneliness and disenchantment. Miss Brill, an elderly woman whose most treasured possession is the outdated fur she drapes over her neck, visits the town square to people watch. She has been doing this for so long now that she views the whole scene as a play, of which she believes she is an integral part of, but her world is shattered when two teenagers mock her and complain about her presence as a nuisance. Interestingly, very little popular literature contains an older person as the primary protagonist; in fact, it is a social grouping that often goes vastly unrecognized in the consciousness of the public. Yet through out the narrative, Mansfield is able to successfully…
