Closer Music Techniques

For this paper I decided to choose a song that is very popular right now called “Closer,” the song is performed by The Chainsmokers and features the up and coming singer Halsey. This song falls under the dance genre and is very popular with the younger crowds right now and held number one on Billboards Hot 100 and many other music top charts around the world. “Closer” also helped the Chainsmokers surpass Calvin Harris’ record by becoming The Chainsmokers fourth number one dance hit on the billboard charts. “Closer” was written by Andrew Taggart, who is one of the two members of The Chainsmokers, Ashley Frangipane, Shaun Frank, Frederic Kennett, Isaac Slade, and Joe King. The Chainsmokers are a DJ duo and usually do not sing on their own …show more content…
The recorded deck beats are used throughout the whole song. Another instrument that you can hear throughout the song is the piano. The piano enters at about 50 seconds in to the song and throughout the song different piano riffs are used. The next instrument that is introduced is the drums, it sounds mostly to be a snare drum. Also, throughout the song the pitch varies from lower to higher. The pitch is usually higher when the two singers are harmonizing and the pitch becomes lower when the two are singing separately. At about one minute and 30 seconds into the song Halsey is introduced and sings a solo. Then at about one minute and 50 seconds her pitch becomes higher to inflict more emotion. Then at about two minutes and ten seconds Halsey and Andrew begin to harmonize the chorus of the song. Throughout the whole song it has a very upbeat tempo. I think the whole meaning behind the lyric is that when you run into an ex boyfriend or ex girlfriend it is usually a bad idea to think about seeing them again, I think that the tempo used in the song keeps the lyrics more light hearted. The emotion the song evokes from me personally it’s a song that makes you want to dance or sing along to. The song also makes me feel like I shouldn’t over think about past relationships

It is evident that music industry and its trends has transformed throughout the ages. From the emergence of rock n’ roll in the 1950s, to the rise of disco in the 1970s, and the popularity of R&B and hip-hop in the 21st century. Although different musical movements defined different decades, the one thing that transcended through the metamorphosis of music was the topics and subjects behind the lyrics. Whether that be sex, race, love, money, or work, all artists have been singing and writing about the same themes since music itself was created. One of the most prominent and controversial issues addressed was politics and race sung through protest songs.…

It shows that marriage can be corrupt and that cheating will cause a lot of person to your “significant other.” This song really is for anyone that has experienced or is going through a marriage or even just a relationship finding out that their significant other is cheating. Sam Smith must’ve gone through something very similar to depict this picture into this song. The pathos in this song is very strong.…

For the rest of the song, the trombone player and Armstrong exchange vocal lines. Towards the end of the song, they are solely scat singing. The back-and-forth reminds me of the discussion we had in class about having impromptu conversations. The two musicians are really playing off of each other’s words. The walking bass and drums set up a consistent beat, with the piano harmonizing and clarinet almost playing as a “third-wheel” to the two vocalists.…

Her first few lines " Hey, yo I don 't even know you and I hate you see all I know is that my girlfriend used to date you" lets you know that know that even though she does not know that guy she hates him and what he is doing to her friend. You can feel how Eve is not happy about the abuse that she is seeing unfold right before her eyes. The chorus itself explains "Love is blind, and it will take over your mind what you think is love, is truly not you need to elevate and find" she is saying that when your feelings play a role then its hard to see pass that. That the girl needs to open her eyes and realize what is happening before it is to…

Rehearsal had to be very extensive for this piece since there were shifting problems because I would be in the wrong position or the notes weren't perfectly in tune. Flowing notes were tricky because they quickly came one after the other for a quite long time and that there were accidentals trickled throughout many of these sections. As well as, the rhythm of the notes which are unnatural making the notes I am playing difficult to play. At the top of the first page of the song there is notation that states that two eighth-notes equate to one quarter and an eighth.…

Throughout my visit to the Hirshhorn Museum there were many video, drawing, and sculpture pieces that really struck me. However, the one instillation that spoke to me the most was a performance piece called “Woman in E” by Ragnar Kjartansson. While I was walking around the museum I kept hearing this ominous and melancholy guitar strum. I originally had thought it was some odd music playing over the sound system to give the entire museum an eerie feel - however, as I kept walking the sound got louder and louder until I arrived at this giant ring of gold tinsel hanging from the ceiling. I peeked inside the ring of these glimmering steamers to see a woman, standing atop a rotating circle platform which also covered in the same streamers, wearing a shimmering gold dress and playing an electric guitar.…

This song talks about the speaker who is abused by her boyfriend but she stands by him because she loves him. This is similar to when we find out that Mayella was abused by her father but still loves him because well, it’s her father. They both show unhealthy relationships and how bad things can be at home. The mood in both of this song and the book is desperate. They are both desperate for love and will do anything to stay by their family/man.…

Have you ever heard a song that has impacted your life? Songs are a form of art that allows artists to express their feelings in a form of music. Songs can be interrupted in many ways; some songs have a more literal meaning, while other songs require you to interpret the lyrics to understand the deeper meaning. Artists often use figurative, metaphorical, and poetic elements in their songs to help develop the overall message. The use of figurative terms in a song leaves the interpretation of the song broad and allows the listener to have their own meaning of the song.…

I think the central idea of this song is that change is difficult especially when you remember all the happy memories. That those memories are in a certain chapter of their life that is now closing. The concern of this song is that they do not really know where they are going to end up and who’s going to be there, or not be there (in life). The purpose is to tell others of what they’ve gone through and to let others know that they aren’t alone. That most people have difficult time adjusting to change.…
