Closed Blinds: A Narrative Fiction

Looming, an edifice coated in menacing shades of beige and reseda eggs on entrance, aching for a visitor's sojourn to ease the grievous nature of what lies ahead. Pale, fresh moonlight reflects off of the blinds’ ignominious demeanor, composing an unsung, offkey harmony and serving as the augur to the lurid reality. The slanted roof, covered in the corpses of rain and autumn’s children, turns upwards discerningly, desperately reaching for escape and guidance. Above, sleeping sun remains in her hiding spot, but the swirling of dawn and dust will indubitably arrive.
Feigning serenity, the dusty doorway sighs, but the creaking floorboards expose the truth as they revile any footsteps. Although only mere hours have passed, the deportment of everything

From the shadows, emerges a white door, so white it is almost evanescent. Somehow, despite the closed blinds, baby blue luminance shimmers as a virgin pathway with the somniferous comforter, strewn haphazardly, serves as the destination, displaying splatters of crimson.
Once a chamber of green that vivified, now the putrid shade emanates illness, and spectators demonstrate repugnance. A denizen of the abode, a youthful woman, turned gory carcass, with lifeless limbs lined with webs of teals and scarlet, exists no longer pure pearl and ivory, but simply grey. Hickory hair tempestuous, eager to run away from such act of ignominy. Stature, not of a skeleton, rather, containing an elegance that only a dead body could possess.
Immersed in layers of peachy skin, lit by the subtle moonbeams, rests a dagger smothered in ruby blood. What malefactor could have committed such an insidious action? One only in possession of wickedness as pure as water. Her eyelids settle in a relaxed state, depicting an unforeseen serenity. Her physiognomy is tired, creased with lines of smiles and tears,as she appears to be at sleep, one would expect to hear shallow breathing. But, the only sound amidst the ashpxiating room, is that of a cat, crying while licking the girl’s frigid, unmoving

The three of us, being willed on by the attentive, watching eyes of our peers, went into the house to find a spot to sleep for the night. It was around eight o’clock, and the last glimpses of brilliant orange and pink light were beginning to fade into a star filled canvas. We first chose to explore the large, three story home, and then later choose a place to rest. I, against my will, was leading the pack because I had the flashlight. We walked towards the back of the house with the boards screeching and bending under our feet.…

Prologue The enigmatic sky was as black as tar, rain fell heavily across the pessimistic city from swirling grey clouds. Blue flashes of lightning struck the tops of towering derelict skyscrapers. Hundreds and thousands of buildings jumbled together in a massive multitude of disarray. Deep in the crevices of the city, in a small dark alley stood two figures, watching each other in contemplative silence.…

The author’s account of the funeral in the Henry James passage conveys arrogant and condescending tones toward the ignobility of the crowd, revealing the superiority with which he regards himself. The irony lies in the difference between how the author and the crowd regard the sympathetic action: whereas the crowd mourns sincerely for the dead, the author scoffs at the lowly burial as he observes, disconnected from the rest of the group. He emphasizes this disconnection, asserting that he stands not in the crowd but rather as a mere spectator in the distance. When describing the funeral, the author employs powerful diction that depicts the impudence resulting from his conceited self-perception. He realizes the “element of the grotesque”…

The early morning sun peeks over the Seattle mountains and through the tall evergreens, the light reaching for every material within its grasp, illuminating the once dim street. On this bright May morning, the light stretches toward the window belonging to Gwen Kennicott. Within the next few seconds the light has cast a shadow through her blinds and onto the grey walls. On an ordinary day, the light trickling through her window wouldn’t have stirred her, but this was no ordinary day.…

A fully intact globe rested against the wall, on it’s side, looking worn out, next to a trashcan that filled with papers. I feared for my life, not only because of the damnable structure, but because of shadows that keep catching my eye. I would catch a glimpse of something, only to find nothing there. Above the door, the abandoned, impaired clock no longer ticked, and it had probably been decades since it last made a noise. “Why am I here?”…

The room is like a “tomb furnished as … a bridal” (86) suite. Among the items found in this room is the toiletry set and clothes that Emily bought for Homer some forty years earlier. But the most disturbing thing that the townspeople find, is a man’s body that had “apparently once lain in the attitude of an embrace… [and next to him is a] second pillow [with] the indention of a head… [and] a long strand of iron-gray hair” (86). It is difficult for any person who is of sound mind and body to be able to understand why and how Emily could live all these years, not only alone in that house with a dead body, but sleeping in the same bed with it.…

Some of you will remember this story. It was ten years ago, and I was employed then as a forensic psychologist in Marin County. Much of my work involved talking to criminals, then testifying as to their sanity in a court of law. On the afternoon this all began, for example — that afternoon when I blacked out in Sara Johnson’s apartment — I was scheduled to examine a man who’d been accused of strangling his wife.…
