Close-Up Photography Analysis

Close-up photography is defined as a photograph taken at close range or with a long focal-length lens. This photo defines this category as it was taken with a long focal-length lens. Although the camera was not particularly close to the subject, I was able to zoom-in to capture the detail of the plant.

I discovered this subject on a walk with my mother through the Mississauga location of the University of Toronto campus. I was taking multiple pictures of subjects with unique texture or colours to find one suitable for this assignment.

While on our walk, I noticed the intricate detail of the thistle flower plant and thought I would take a picture of it to see how it would turn out on camera. Focusing on the subject posed some trouble for me

Shot #1: I zoomed in on the roof of our chicken coop to illustrate horizontal lines. The chicken coop is built with all the lines listed, however, the longest of the lines, are horizontal. So, the horizontal lines made for the longest shot time. Shot #2: I focused in on the gold stitch, the other toys in the background blurred, creating the depth of field visual element. Shot #3: I zoomed in on tree bark at a local park to illustrate texture.…

This picture is black and white of young boy called Flavio, feeding rice to his younger brother Zacarias. My first impression of Flavio’s archive was that it seemed to be a very sad story. This photo shows the horrors of poverty and Flavio’s strength to survive, and even the courage to accept death without even thinking about himself but of his brothers and sisters. I did some research and found out that Flavio is a 12-year-old boy who has the huge responsibility of being an adult. He is able to accept this responsibility while still remaining vibrant and hopeful even though Flavio is suffering from a physical illness, poverty, overwork and worry.…

Anna Atkins, the first women photographer, had many talents and I chose her book covers “Cyanotypes of British and Foreign Ferns” because I thought it was the best example that both spoke about what she did for photography as well as science. Her work was not just art but it itself was groundbreaking for other women photographers and scientist alike. This process, of documenting ferns, allowed people to understand what they looked like, size and scale, giving proof to science and the botanist community on their existence and important documentary need. Her images allowed for women, in her time, to see that there was more to photography then just a portrait shot - also giving women a real stand alone place in a field, science and photography,…

For the line shot I chose a vertical line. I saw that m railing had vertical lines and the curtain next to it did as well. So as I shoot this I make sure that I get all the vertical lines into the shot. Next is the depth of field shot. This was my favorite shot, I just loved the way the camera would focus in and out and doing that was changing the depth of the shot.…

The moment that my father invested into a photo booth was the moment that I would begin to develop the skill of hard work. This skill would in time lead me to become a better person. Up until 2013, only occasionally would my guardian require my assistance with his work. I could either carry bags in or out of the house or support him in setting up. When my father bought a photo booth in 2013, that simple work that I did periodically would increase dramatically.…
