Social groups are based on how they dress, carry themselves or basically anything one can think of. Cliques are seen everywhere. The way a person dresses is thought to define whom one is. Chloe states “Clothing creates a student’s image in high school, and people’s perception of an outfit you [one] wear[s], can determine the friends that you [one] make [s]” (Chloe). High school students thrive on being the most attractive they can appear to others. It’s thought that appearance will increase ones social status. There are various examples of just how important appearance is in the social life of adolescence. The popular movie, “Mean Girls”, is a perfect example of how cliques work. In this movie the girls conform Katy into what is considered to be a “hot teen”. Regina, Gretchen, and Karen play their roles of making rules on what Katy is and is not allowed to do. They include rules such as on Wednesday’s they wear pink, and one cannot wear sweat pants more than once a week, or they cannot sit with the group. The stress that is involved in appearing perfect to the adolescent world can sometimes seem unbearable. Remaining flawless is an overwhelming job in high school. It creates stress and most times makes teens become depressed. Teens become unhappy with their image or social group. Teens bring each other down based on the flaws they have which causes emotional distress. This is unfit for an adolescent to carry. Adolescences tear each other apart based on the clothes and designers they wear. Ability and personality are put second to appearance in high school. One is no longer worried whether their friends will stand by them during the hard times as long as they are attractive enough to be seen with in the hallways at school. The way adolescences pick their friends will not help them through a healthy high school career or support them in the rough times throughout life. The stress to conform in appearance will constantly drive them to be less and less of an individual. It will make it hard to search for personal happiness considering they are constantly seeking the approval of their
