According to the Scope of Practice Policy (2017) web page Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) are not recognized by Kansas policy as an autonomous primary care provider. Instead, Kansas similar to many other states, practice authority requires collaborative practice and a written protocol for a medical plan of care with a responsible physician. However, the physician does not have to be present under Kansas Regulation 60-11-101 for the APRN to deliver primary, secondary or tertiary care. Prescriptive authority for APRN requires a written protocol with a detailed medical plan for each classification of drug that may be prescribed by the APRN.
