The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) recommended nine essentials of baccalaureate education for professional nursing practice. Essential VII is to assess the health, healthcare, and emergency preparedness needs of a defined population ("Essentials," 2008). My preceptor showed me the high census alert system that the hospital implemented for the Labor & Delivery department. The Clinical Staff Supervisor (CSS) will serve as a patient flow coordinator in the cases of an activated high census alert. The CSS is responsible for initiating the high census alert by bed type every 4 hours based on the census. The number of nurses in L&D department stayed the same since 2007. The manager started working in L&D since 2012 and the census steadily goes up and noted the need for more nurses. She always supported her nurses and defended them when appropriate. She requested several times for additional four full time nurses in response to the nurses complain of heavy workload that the management kept on denying. And because of her persistence for additional four full time nurses and one scrub tech, the management finally approved. This will not only benefit the nurses but also the patient. This will create a safe patient care and better quality patient outcome. She can be strict in regards to continuing education that needs to be done.
