Clinical Supervision Journal

The clinical supervision is really a very beneficial experience. In the past two weeks, I was with my preceptor at the clinical site (supervising students) and also in the simulation lab at the University of Tampa. On 10/02/15, I went to St. Joseph`s Behavioral Center with my preceptor for supervising the student`s clinical rotation. In the morning, students gathered together in the front lobby and the preceptor discussed with the students their plan for the day. The preceptor maintains a log book to keep track of students’ rotation in every unit of the behavioral center. The preceptor escorted the students from the lobby to their respective units and introduced them to the charge nurse of the unit and to other staff members. She informed …show more content…
The preceptor told me regarding the student`s assignments and projects for the upcoming weeks. She informed that there will be a faculty meeting on October 14th which I can attend. I along with two students went for a treatment plan meeting that is being conducted every Friday morning, in the conference room. The meeting was chaired by the chief psychiatrist. The other members in the meeting are; a registered nurse (supervisor), a pharmacist, a social worker, an occupational therapist, and a case manager. During the meeting the chief psychiatrist read the names of the clients and the registered nurse gave a clinical narrative of each client. Each team member discussed the priorities and goals for the client and helped to plan the client`s recovery and other services that the client would need upon discharge. After the meeting, the chief was kind enough to spend time with us and educate us on the major differences between depression, psychosis, delirium, and hallucinations. We went for rounds twice to each unit and spend time with the students. At 12 noon, the preceptor gathered all students in the activity room for the debriefing and post conference. One student presented a case and after that we discussed regarding the treatment modalities and …show more content…
Students were given scripts and were explained how to enact the scenario. The scenario was enacted in a broad street community mental health clinic with the professor playing the part of a patient with psychosis and students playing their respective roles as a registered nurse, social worker, administrator, and therapist. After the role play, there was a debriefing session where everyone shared their observations and concerns. The preceptor explained the importance of therapeutic communications and answered their questions and concerns. After debriefing, the students came back to the simulation lab and watched a video clip on suicide ideations, treatment, and precautions. The students were then paired and conducted an initial physical assessment on patients with hallucinations. After the role play the preceptor debriefed the session and asked various reflection questions such as; “What do you think will you do in a real case scenario?” Then again the students watched another video clip on the psychotic effects on the patients with schizophrenia. Another video was shown depicting a patient picking up medications at a pharmacy who experiences auditory hallucinations. The preceptor debriefed the entire session and also talked about the upcoming assignment. This simulation lab activity was a varied experience for me and I was able to get new ideas after observing this session, such as; how to conduct organized simulation lab

Prince et al. (2005) previously surveyed fourth year medical students on the effect of transition from pre-clinical to clinical practice (during clinical clerkship programs) on their perceived workload, clinical knowledge/skills and learning. It was revealed that the students were uncertain as to how to behave and act, mainly because they were uncertain of what was expected of them. The students also reported a drastic increase in clinical workload, which reduced their study hours. Consequently, a majority of students felt they were moderately prepared with regard to applying their pre-clinical knowledge and skills (ibid).…

Simulation is a flexible teaching method that can be adopted to meet both the programme requirements and students learning needs. A stimulated environment provides conducive learning that enables students to repetitively practice until competence is attained. One challenge my students had was course overload. With so much information in a short period of time they were unable to link the theory to the practical environment. As such, I have realized it was not the actual learning of the skills that was the problem for the students, it was the application of them.…

Role Play Reflection Before doing the video, I became somewhat anxious at the thought of being on camera; knowing that I was going to be evaluated did not help my anxiety at all. After all, I am an introvert; even at that I love listening to people talk about their life’s experiences, and love to help them resolve their issues whenever possible. This is one reason I am looking forward to learning more about the social work field. I have always been careful at how much advice I offer a person; even more so now, after this class, because I recognize that if a worker is not prepared to help in the proper way she can do more harm than good to all the parties involved in the process. I am also aware that I am a social work student, and that my…
