8/19/2015: The social worker was asked by the nurse to assist a patient, per Dr. R. Sundaram. The patient was requesting a letter to state his competence in supervision of his two children. The Social Worker is not qualified to address a letter such as this and consulted her supervisor about this matter. The Clinical Services Officer, Nursing Service Director, LPN – Team Lead, Dr. R. Sundaram and the social worker met to discuss this patient’s case. It was substantiate that there is not enough evidence available to compose any type of letter addressing the issues that the patient required, because the patient has only been seen twice at our clinic and only first established care on 07/31/2015.…
POST-GRADUATE GOALS STATEMENT As I approach graduating with my bachelors in social work, it is a good time to stop and reflect and assess my future. Over the last two years as a student I have been working steadfastly with several other community members to address the unmet needs of LGBTQ homeless youth, over this period we were able to successfully start a new 501(c)3 Homeless Gay Kids - Houston. I plan to both continue my education seeking my MSW while and am now hopeful that I will be opening the door on a drop-in center, Tony’s Place, that will be open 7 days a week before the end of this summer break between schools.…
At the beginning of the semester I was somewhat intimated by the amount of course work that was expected of each student in this class. However, as time went on and I started to complete the assignments, it became clear how useful many of them were, particularly the resume and the career exploration paper. Both of these assignments were beneficial in their own way, despite the time and effort that went in to completing them according to the instructions. The resume and subsequent critiques from multiple sources yielded a professional document that is flawless and ready to be disseminated to potential employers after a minor customization to it based upon the job description and requirements. The career exploration assignment has taught me how…
My career goal is to get into a trauma/crisis center supporting victims and survivors through counseling and legal help as a therapist and advocate. I hope to work with this population and learn more about resiliency, and what makes a person more likely to be resilient after a trauma, and what ways as a therapist can we add protective and promotive factors into clients lives before and after the trauma to best help them in the future. I also am interested into developing and researching further factors that can protect children from trauma, and develop ways to help them after trauma where there are less problems and symptoms in their later life. I believe that it is important to work with the survivors who have experienced a traumatic experience and help them overcome the difficulties they are going through because of it. However, I believe that it is important to try work proactively against trauma to support the future victims.…
As a veteran I choose to continue my service to the United States by serving as a Social Worker with the Department of Veterans Affairs. I have been working at one of the local VA Medical Centers for a little over a year. Initially I see my role as a broker; connecting my clients with support services they need with the hopes to grow into an advocate supporting my veterans. Serving as a champion for this population seems to be a no brainer for me; as I believe that foundational piece is critical to their wellbeing. Advocates have the ability to use either a ecological or system theory in the support of homeless veterans as “both perspective emphasize external interactions instead of internal functioning”…
It has been a big step for me, leaving my job of five years in the Australian Army to come try something like the Foundation studies program, something that a few years ago, I’d never dreamed of doing. After school got accepted into University but was not sure if I would enjoy it, and was not confident that I would choose a University course that I would enjoy for four years. I wanted to do science but not sure of which branch of science I wanted to go into, so I decided that I would join the Army. Joining the Army, to me, was the best decision of my life, it enabled me to get out and see Australia and have some life experiences that I would not get anywhere else. Since being in the Army I have developed a passion for psychology and the Foundation studies program is a pathway that can take me there.…
Reading this assured me that I do want to help people because nobody should be made out to feel as though they are worthless. I learned about myself that I am more caring and compassionate towards others and their problems more than I thought. I want to be able to listen and help the clients get the resources they need, and overcome the problems they are facing. I want to be the kind of social worker that people trust and want to talk to, not talk to because they have to. I want to form a relationship with them and get to know them so I can help each and every client as best…

The field of medicine is not a stranger to me.as a can remember I fallen in love with this field when I was 7 years old. At the time, my mum took me to the hospital when it was time for my annual physical exam and immunization. For some reason I liked the way the doctor interacted with me and my mum. There was something special about how the health care staff interacted with us in a compassionate way. That has stuck in my in my head ever since then.…
It is not easy to keep up with all my obligations, but, I know I am doing them because at the end all my hard work will pay off making me one of the best social workers out there. As of now if I was a professional social worker, I know that I would be best with any client that is willing to change their life around for good, perhaps also with the ones that believe their lives can no longer change. With the clients that have no hope I will work on showing them they have a purpose in life. Also perhaps directing them to a psychologist can help them build their self-esteem, help them feel empowered and also let them know they can make a change to help themselves and the community they live in. In addition, for my clients that are looking to succeed and want to have a positive bond with their loved ones being able to relate to them emotionally can bring me closer to understanding their frustration and ways of finding better solutions to their issues.…
Because I have always had a calling to help people, social work feels like a major that has designed for me. My connection to social work first started with my personal experiences. Growing up as a child, my family and our happiness was disrupted by the violence and corruption on my home country The Democratic Republic of Congo. When I was seven years old, my father, who worked as an army general, was assassinated by a political group that was trying to rise to power.…
Why are you interested in the field of social work? Upon starting college, I was undecided, and was unsure of what I wanted to major in. I was often asked, “What do you like to do?” My response would always be I enjoy helping others. I have always wanted a career that would afford me the opportunity to work with people and help them.…
My first experience with a LCSW gave me a strong desire to never become one. This was due to the fact that my abused best friend was scared that my mother had reached out to CPS for help. While individuals interested in social work may say that their career goals stem from the fact that they would like to “help people”, I understand that social workers cannot change people’s lives, but people can change their own life. And social workers often have the keys and the ability to teach an individual how. Any profession can be considered a “helping profession”: we need dentists, nurses, doctors, accountants, even IRS agents.…
