Clinical Skills Strengths

My current strength with the foundational clinical skills is that I know how to communicate effectively with people. My bachelor’s degree is in communications. With that degree, I have been taught how to effectively communicate with other people. I see that as strength because I can teach other people what I have learned. Another strength that I have is that I can get people to open up to me. I have always had this skill, it comes natural to me. People tend to tell me that I am easy to speak with.
My weakness is that I feel so uncomfortable with clinical skills. I am a bit insecure with my clinical skills. I am hoping that with my residency that I begin to feel a bit more comfortable with using clinical skills. At this point, I do not know actually how to strengthen these skills, but I am hoping that as I begin to use these clinical skills, that I can become comfortable with using skills.

(2005) previously surveyed fourth year medical students on the effect of transition from pre-clinical to clinical practice (during clinical clerkship programs) on their perceived workload, clinical knowledge/skills and learning. It was revealed that the students were uncertain as to how to behave and act, mainly because they were uncertain of what was expected of them. The students also reported a drastic increase in clinical workload, which reduced their study hours. Consequently, a majority of students felt they were moderately prepared with regard to applying their pre-clinical knowledge and skills (ibid).…

A weakness that I have is that I do not know how to say no to individuals that ask me for help since I love to help people. It is important that I learn to say no when helping others gets in the way of me accomplishing my tasks. It is important that I do both, but not when I run the risk of not meeting my deadlines and me staying late hours after work to get my work done. It has not been an easy task saying no, but I am learning to be okay with saying no because it is important that it does not interfere with my responsibilities.…
