Clinical Reflection

Decent Essays
Prior to experiencing Psychiatric Clinical I had a somewhat caring and compassionate view of the psychiatric patient. I had a general understanding of some of the basic disorders that patients face. I would have described myself as your typical caring nursing student, equipped to care for the needs of the mental health patient. I discovered however, through clinical experience and hands on learning with actual patients that my perception of the mental health patient was limited at best and has changed immensely.
Before clinical I had grouped most mental health patients in one box. The uniqueness of each individual disorder was not expressed until they were observed. By observing and interacting with the patients in a clinical setting

This will give the physician/psychiatrists a better portrayal of the patients’ mental states. They will get to know their feelings, desires, and goals. Instead of just getting the information from the nurses and attendents who also don’t spend enough time with the patients. In conclusion, D.L. Rosenhan’s article was interesting to read.…

However, sceptics have questioned how the concept is sometimes interpreted, arguing that there is unclear logical and pragmatic examination of its value in professional development. Therefore, developing a reflective report is an undertaking that needs to be approached with caution, more so if individual reflection and critical thinking are to be rooted. The purpose of this reflective report is to reflect on the collaborative boat bus project performance and the experiences of working within a multidisciplinary group. The report will give consideration to the feedback we obtained from the client and from Adam Smith (tutor) and how we then applied this feedback to feed in the report writing. An iterative model, meaning learning through participating, somewhat adapted to the one in Bulman and Schultz (2013)’s ‘Reflective Practice in Nursing p232’, Gibbs (1988)’s reflective cycle explains the significance of the evaluation process, especially building on negative as well as positive feedback.…

I saw the same thing in them I saw in my mother: a desire to get better and be the best people they could, but a loss as to how. I realized my past has given me a unique perspective that allows me to connect with individuals who are impacted by these illnesses on a deeper level. As mental illness is so prevalent in society today, but still taboo, I know this experience provides a unique perspective and understanding that will be a great asset as I work with…

Freshman year I started volunteering at Suncoast hospice; mainly because of the fact that I needed to build up my pre-med resume with healthcare experience but also because it was the only local health care related volunteer activity and transportation was an issue. Little did I know that taking on a challenge that would have such an impacting effect on my character and how I interpret the world. Through various activities ranging from baking cookies, making hand sewn comfort bears, to delivering groceries, and folding over 500 “thinking about you cards”; I have come to the realization that the ripple effect does not have any limitations, no matter how big or small one’s actions. Completing over 100 hours with hospice is an accomplishment…

Since researching this topic, my nursing practice has changed in the way that I interview, assess, and treat my clients. Throughout my education in nursing school I was always taught a more holistic approach, however I was never truly conducting my assessments and interviews with clients within this matter. I am always respectable and caring towards clients, but in my past practices within clinical, my focus was primarily on the disease process and preventing the disease from worsening. Within this semester I have improved my practice, with the help of this research, to not only treat the disease process, but to use the same focus as CAM and treat the person as a whole. I found this to also help in establishing better client-caregiver relationships.…

During the second week of class, one of my fellow classmates and I were provided the opportunity to engage with standardized patients (SPs), provide care, and develop our caring techniques (Bornais, J., El-Masri, M., Krahn, R. & Raiger, J., 2012). The scenario provided for this week involved Brandon Sharp, a gentleman who suffers from a spinal cord injury. When providing care for Brandon, my partner and I began by completing a focused assessment on his nervous system and moved onto bathing the SP, changing the soiled bedding, and completing a head-to-toe assessment, which we forgot to complete alongside the focused assessment. We then finished this provision of care by feeding Brandon applesauce & juice and moving him to his wheelchair via…

I have a lot of experience interacting with patients through working in a nursing home, the hospital, and my clinicals so as a general rule I usually feel pretty comfortable around patients and interacting with them. I have found that I am genuinely interested in patients’ stories, and what has gotten them to the place they are currently at. I also tend to be a really empathetic person. d. I hope to be exposed to the struggles that many people are facing today, and to gain a higher comfort around those with mental illness.…

Teamwork and collaboration, good communication, and confidence are the three strengths I believe I demonstrated during this rotation. My clinical rotation as a student nurse did not only imply observing the providers, but also meant active participation on my part. Being engaged, enabled me to put into practice what I have learned in theory. The first day of my rotation, the nurse permitted me to augment the Pitocin dose by two units after 20 minutes. I thought that was exciting because I learned about the medication in the class and participated in administering it.…

Since my first few weeks of outpatient therapy, I’ve heard that my diagnosis does not define me, that I am more than my diagnosis. While I understand that to a degree, I know that what I deal with is a large part of my current identity along with who I am as a person. My identity strongly revolves around it and I cannot pretend that it does not shape my life. In 8th grade I was put into an outpatient program at a local hospital for having suicidal thoughts.…

Within the first two weeks of clinical, I believe there were a few aspects of my practice that were successful. One of these aspects involved my ability to properly irrigate a nasogastric tube. I see this as a strength because when asked to complete this task by my co-caring nurse, I informed her that I have never done this before, in which she responded by guiding me through the process and answering any questions I had. From this, I was able to correctly irrigate the patient’s tube as well as learn a new skill. Another aspect I believe to have showcased my success as a student nurse occurred when my co-caring nurse showed me how to reset a Sigma Spectrum IV Pump.…

My first clinical experience was at St. Vincent hospital on a geriatric unit, when I was a second year nursing student. During my time there, nurses often approached me to provide small learning experiences and teach students how to be efficient. When a nurse on the unit asked for help with a bed bath for a patient with whom I was not familiar, I agreed. I wanted to get as much experience as I could. The nurse led me to the patient 's room right away.…
