This was my first day of clinical and I was pretty scared. However, I'm glad that I got chosen to be in the X-Ray department. Compared to other peers in our class, I would say I got the best experience. I got to shadow a student named Shannon who was also shadowing X-ray Technicians as well. She is now in a 2-year program where she does clinical rotations at Peconic, Brentwood, and Manningville Hospitals from 8-4 through Mon-Fri and all summer. When I first got there we went into a X-Ray exam room where she stretched a Tech named Michelle. She was so nice and told me and Shannon about a patient with a gangrene foot and how it smelled the whole department up. As time went along, Shannon began to show me about all the equipment they use in an

Thus far, I have learned many important aspects of becoming an effective therapist. One of the major parts of training involves evaluation and feedback from supervisors or peers. I think evaluations are an important part of training because it provides feedback to areas, which you are doing well in, and areas in which you will need improvement. I believe that without evaluations, we as therapist cannot grow into effective therapist. To date I cannot think of any job or career that does not use “end of the year evaluations”.…

My personnel strengths during this clinical experience included my willingness to learn, my openness to new experiences, and my ability to communicate. I feel that because I am eager to learn and I really do enjoy new experiences is the reason why shadowing the nurse was such an eye opening experiences. I do tend to be overly sensitive but I can recognize the feelings within myself when that is happening most of the time that I can tell myself its not about me and get over those negative feelings. After shadowing the nurse, I now understand that clinical skills come with clinical experience and…

In matching Janet’s posture, language and tone, I reflected back to Janet her external behaviours. When I commented to Janet “and because you know that at the base of it’s not you it’s him” I put into my words her thoughts regarding his behaviour. I found this skill of counselling particularly difficult in this session due to our friendship.…

An area of weakness I noticed during my first clinical rotation would be my self-confidence. Even when it came down to my review from my Clinical instructor, she also agreed that I need to have more confidence in myself because I know what I’m doing. I often looked at my clinical instructor for confirmation after I would give the patient instructions or different exercises, double checking that I was performing correctly. I agree with the comments that were made and I have realized that I do look for confirmation when making some decisions. In many situations I already knew the correct response but I did not want to make a mistake so then hesitated from acting right away.…

I assumed the main difference between counseling and clinical psychology was clinical psychology focuses more on diagnosing and treating patients with mental illness and disorders.…
