Clinical Reflection Paper

The second week of clinical was a successful one. I learned a tremendous amount of information regarding the patient assessment, the difference between the Siemens and GE rooms, and how to critique images. I have developed a routine for getting the patients and returning them to their rooms. Before I get a patient for an exam, I make sure to set up the room. This is very important because once the patient has entered the room everything should be in place and ready for the exam. Many patients that I have assessed are either unable to walk, stand, or even move. I try to handle each patient with care to reduce any further pain that could occur. This week I was able to be comped on various exams, as well as continue ones that I previously performed.

I learned that it is very important to think ahead of time as to which way you bring the bed into the room. Since I brought my patient into the room feet first I was not able to perform my surgical lateral hip on the table. I wasted too much time and put in my patient in unwarranted discomfort by having to slide the resuscitation board under him. I wish it would have not happened that way but it was a good learning experience.…

According to the Scope of Practice Policy (2017) web page Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) are not recognized by Kansas policy as an autonomous primary care provider. Instead, Kansas similar to many other states, practice authority requires collaborative practice and a written protocol for a medical plan of care with a responsible physician. However, the physician does not have to be present under Kansas Regulation 60-11-101 for the APRN to deliver primary, secondary or tertiary care. Prescriptive authority for APRN requires a written protocol with a detailed medical plan for each classification of drug that may be prescribed by the APRN.
