Clinical Reflection Essay

The first day of clinical is often a nerve-racking time. There are many uncertainties about what will happen in the eight hour period. In the first hour, however, it was apparent that these nerves were for nothing. I immediately started learning what it meant to be a nurse on the mother baby unit and what it is like to be part of a nursing team. The group of nurses on this unit was not only knowledgeable but also encouraging. It was through this encouragement that I not only was able to identify some weaknesses to work on, but also some strengths I possessed. When I first arrived on the unit, it was shift change. This meant that all of the nurses were giving report to each other. The nurses that were giving report easily identified the most important information about each client and gave a concise report. While I was watching this exchange I couldn’t help think about how I do not know how to give a very effective report. I have practiced SBAR before, but it is still very difficult. Since this seems to be a very important aspect in nursing, I would like to practice this skill more. Our clinical group leaves before the next shift change, so I know I will most …show more content…
I was able to really communicate well with the nurse that was mentoring me, along with the other nurses. Before going into every room she would tell me what she was going to be doing. Then I would have time to ask questions. Then when we were done assessing the patient, she would let me ask her question about what I saw. She also asked me what I thought about certain assessments such as the LATCH score and fetal heart rate. It was through this open communication that I was able to learn a lot more about the hospital works. I also interacted with the other nurses. I asked them if I could be part of the heel stick test and hearing test. I am happy that I did, because it was a very interesting process to

She gave me many new experiences and taught me a lot through engaging me in with the patient.…

One of the components of a value-enhancing HIT platform is that it is patient-centered. This means that the system trails the patients across services, sites, and time for the full episode of care, and this includes hospitalization, outpatient clinic visits, laboratory testing, physical therapy, and other types of interventions (Porter & Lee, 2013). And I’m inclined to agree with you that collaboration between laboratory and primary care services should be integrated and immediately available to patients. To integrate care for individual patients across locations, healthcare providers must learn to tie together the patient’s care across the different sites.…

I have experienced overwhelming and exciting moments and experiences throughout my university career. Some of them were encouraging and some of these experiences were intimidating. I have learned a tremendous amount of information throughout my classes, although some of it seemed silly and wasteful, a lot of it will be carried on as I move on as a nursing professional. Each semester felt like putting pieces of a huge puzzle together, and as time went on the information seemed to fit together a little better. There is still a lot to learn, but most important of all I have learned that nursing is constantly changing and evolving, so there is always going to be something new to learn or to develop.…

My personnel strengths during this clinical experience included my willingness to learn, my openness to new experiences, and my ability to communicate. My biggest limitations for this clinical experience are that I can be overly sensitive, lack of clinical skills, and my desire not to make mistakes. I feel that because I am eager to learn and I really do enjoy new experiences is the reason why shadowing the nurse was such an eye opening experiences. I do tend to be overly sensitive but I can recognize the feelings within myself when that is happening most of the time that I can tell myself its not about me and get over those negative feelings. After shadowing the nurse, I now understand that clinical skills come with clinical experience and…

I observed the responsibilities of a Labor and Delivery Nurse, during the first day. I was able to gain much information about normal spontaneous vaginal deliveries and also observe how each delivery differed between that of the next mother. On the third and fourth day, I was able to learn how inadequate staff was handled in these areas and how this affected the clients as well. Childbirth is an unknown experience, therefore, nurses must be ready for help even if extra staff is not available. I was also able to learn about my personal boundaries because one of these clients that came in ready to delivery, were a family member of mine.…
