To support my clinical practice project topic of proper and frequent hand washing in preventing the spread of infections and illnesses in a correctional setting, the CDC offers a wealth of information about reducing the spread of illnesses and promotion of health through preventative measures. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] (2014), the primary mission of the institute is to protect the American people from safety, health, and security threats, both regionally and globally, through scientific research and information to the public. 2. Seek current practices being utilized by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitations and Corrections to educate inmates about handwashing and the impact of these current procedures in illness and disease prevention.
3. Retrieval of data from the Quality Assurance Department at Noble Correctional Institute, in hopes of gathering statistical data on the amount of infections that are being treated that could have possibly been prevented by more frequent handwashing.

Create and finalize the patient educational tool while perhaps coaching and recruiting fellow intake nurses to help teach and implement the educational tool.

My idea is to use this teaching project as a practical way to engage patients in practicing frequent and proper handwashing. This project will not simply be a boring teaching session or a displayed poster board, but an interactive learning activity that will demonstrate proper handwashing techniques with practical application to the correctional setting. Perhaps a hand hygiene kit could even be given to each participant to keep after the demonstration. Essentially, my plan is to develop a simple and straightforward educational tool with a live demonstration. With over 2,500 males housed in a single complex, the spread of infection can be both dangerous and fatal (Haverstick, Goodrich, Freeman, Kullar, James, & Ahrens, 2017).
