Personal Experience
Within this paper, I will reflect on an experience gained in relation to providing oral care on clinical placement using John’ Model of Structured Reflection (2006). By utilizing the model of reflection I hope to demonstrate my knowledge and understanding in relation to the importance of the skill as well as identifying areas with scope for learning.
It was my first day of clinical placement at the Golden Manor. I was advised that I was going to preform a.m. care on my selected assignment. I came readily prepared as I assured to look over my residents care plan prior to providing care

However, research suggests that student’s first clinical experiences in the realm of clinical practice can be a source of anxiety and stress. Sources of stress compromises reality shock, feelings of abandonment, the stress of injuring a client or implementing mistakes, feeling incompetent and nervousness regarding the clinical process (Houghton et al., 2012). I felt incompetent as I was putting Jake at risk for illness. If his family would have come in and asked if the care was completed they could have been extremely upset affecting the way I felt. I also felt ashamed as a student I am to adhere to the policies of meeting the needs of a client and was unsuccessful in carrying out the task at hand. As a student it is imperative to follow the residents care plan and ensure the client is in the best care. This is also a policy at the Golden Manor. Although my preceptor was unaware what had happened, he could have possibly taken notice and that could have caused great embarrassment for myself. However, if I would have brought the issue to my preceptor I could have gained a valuable learning opportunity. Nursing literature suggests that, at times, opportunities for teaching and learning clinical skills are sometimes missed. Supervision is known to be one of the main elements that assisted students in learning or implementing skills in …show more content…
Luckily, I took initiative in regards to my actions and was able to resolve the way I was feeling and provided the oral care as soon as I could. This liberated me from feelings of embarrassment and allowed me to feel

The role and responsibilities of an RN especially with regards to medication administration, hold great significance as they coincide with legislations and codes. According to the discussed documents, Jo’s lack of competence was evident as demonstrated through her medication error, she had an inability to keep to her scope of practice and also to the medication management system created in the residential aged facility. Jo did not practice ethical nursing as the ethical issues that arose in this scenario were not dealt with correctly; she did not ask for help when she needed it, nor did she show respect to her colleague’s (the prescribers) role when she took on the role of the prescriber herself. Neither did she demonstrate the important values…

Nurses can learn from this incident and enhance patient care. For example, Zahedi et al. (2013) indicate that nurses are entirely responsible for providing high-quality healthcare and listening to the needs of patients. In the process, they should remain alert to any issues that patients may have and ensure that patients stay free from any form of abuse. Zahedi et al.…

Prince et al. (2005) previously surveyed fourth year medical students on the effect of transition from pre-clinical to clinical practice (during clinical clerkship programs) on their perceived workload, clinical knowledge/skills and learning. It was revealed that the students were uncertain as to how to behave and act, mainly because they were uncertain of what was expected of them. The students also reported a drastic increase in clinical workload, which reduced their study hours. Consequently, a majority of students felt they were moderately prepared with regard to applying their pre-clinical knowledge and skills (ibid).…

I still wanted to be able to help people and make them happy. Dental hygiene caught my attention and I began my research. This is a career where I am still very involved with people and I will be able to help them feel more comfortable with their teeth and smile, ultimately boosting their confidence and self-esteem. Throughout this paper I am going to be discussing the time I spent observing two great hygienists Becky, who is very relaxed and welcoming to her patients, and Belinda, who has a great way of delivering oral hygiene information. Becky is a mother of three and graduated from Oxnard Community College.…

The patients who sought treatment at this practice were in need of preventive treatments, education, routine checkups, and restorations due to trauma or decay. By observing this office, I will be able to better communicate with young patients and more capable of addressing their early care needs. The thing that I liked best about Dr. Campbell’s office was the open floor plan. The layout of the operator and dental chairs was less formal and lead to a more relaxed and shared experience.…

Nurses should always be aware of the professional competence of colleagues and other employees. Since the main goal of nursing is to provide for the well-being of patients, that includes being alert to incompetence or impairment to other medical care providers. If it is found that a medical caregiver is unable to provide adequate care, then the appropriate council should be notified to decide what to do about the situation to prevent anymore inadequate care being given to patients. A nurse has a responsibility to one's self as well as the patients. Nurses should treat themselves with the same care that they would a patient.…

“It was all so easy and it was all so damn fun….it wasn’t easy and it was not fun (Shem, p.143).” After graduating from medical school, students advance on into the medical field with an aspiration of the field itself being similar to what was described to them in medical school. Some students say that their years in medical school were easy, but soon came to the realization that what they’ve believed to be the best approaches in treatment are challenged as they enter their medical training. During medical training, interns are taught to follow the rules and regulations of the hospital when dealing with each patient and their specific illnesses.…

Introduction to the Dental Hygiene profession has been a complete and enjoyable class that set the core all the clinical documentation and protocol to follow here at Fortis college. As part of this class the instructor had create a variety of interactive assignments where students get to experience what it feels when having a real patient in front of them. Such was the clinic observation activity where we, the lower clinic class, had the opportunity to observe how students of a higher class were handling a full clinic section with the help of their high qualified instructors. One of the expectations I had for this activity was that I would be able to see the process of care in action, since the clinician brings the patient to the operatory…

I had an opportunity to observe different types of treatments and to interact with a variety of patients. I recognized the value of teamwork in delivering the highest quality of dental care by watching how the assistants prep rooms and sterilize instruments, as well as the insurance and billing related work done by front desk staff. I also learned about the basic layout of a dental clinic, such as the areas designated for instruments sterilization, supplies, and x-rays. By asking questions, I acquired new knowledge about the names of instruments and the process behind different dental procedures.…

It was also a chance to analyse and recognise anything that needed to change in order to improve the quality of care provided. One particular reflection produced the opportunity to reflect on confidence. This was an area that had grown considerably within personal care. The reflection process helps to deepen the understanding of the fundamental aspect of building a relationship with the patient; this is something that should not be underestimated like it is by many student nurses as discussed in Bower (2009). An aspect that was identified during reflecting that needed developing was communication with the patient when engaging in personal care, the NMC (2015) states that in order to practice effectively and provide dignity in care you must be able to communicate clearly.…

Health professionals want to maintain a perfect image, therefore, admitting to an error be challenging. Nurses need to maintain a high standard of behavior on and off duty and take full responsibility for their action and claim accountability of any mistake made. Documentation is a vital part of nursing as it contains all the information of the patient which then can be accessed by the government organizations during an audit. In RN Liz’s instance, she breached the code of rights, domains of the competence and standards of the principle in the code of conduct. She did not show professionalism and did not take proper responsibility while administering medication to Mr. A. she also failed to document the incident and to speak to or take advice from her co-workers or seniors RN’s in response to her situation of feeling…
