To further my insight in the medical field I spent a week at a hospital in a range of departments and was able to see how: holistic care, communication and knowledge are all essential qualities of a doctor. When I attended ward rounds, a patient who had third degree burns was not aware of the extent of her condition. When the doctor explained this to her he was very sensitive and supportive in the way he communicated with her, this conveyed to me the importance of empathising with a patient about their situation. Whilst in surgery I was able to meet patient who suffered a severe case of gangrene and had his lower leg amputated. I observed GP’s advising each other in order to give a definitive diagnosis swiftly. I was able to see this in action when a patient came in coughing blood. The initial diagnosis was a severe chest infection but to make a more definitive diagnosis a chest x-ray was ordered and it was found to be a haemothorax likely to be due to a blood clotting defect showing that a doctor has to be extremely decisive.
