Advocacy is a concept that can take one proposed outcome and awaken all other alternatives unreachable to the client’s awareness. According to Sheperis and Sheperis (2015), professional advocacy refers to actions taken in order to advance the profession of counseling in general and the clinical mental health profession. This papers’ focus will demonstrate an emphasis on inmates and ways in which Clinical Mental Health Counselors can advocate for them. On a day-to-day basis, far too many inmates are kept in conditions that threaten their safety, health, and human dignity. The attested real scenario given by Bryson Martel did just that.

Falling in the cracks and most times forgotten about are sexual violence against male, which continues to rise in the prison systems. The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) was passed in 2003 with unanimous support from both parties in Congress. Counseling is thought of as a waste of money or a sign of weakness for some. Others think of it as a way of life and setting one’s heavy life burdens down in action of releasing. One way to advocate for view change, may be to target specific cultures or backgrounds and evoke change within those communities by forming groups and facilitating outreach programs. The biggest barrier is not breaking through the stereotype, counseling isn’t a show of weakness but in fact shows great strength.
