In today’s dynamics of health care, nursing researchers play a significant role in joint partnerships with other health care disciplines to develop evidence-based practices that improve the care and outcomes of their patients (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2014). The identification of a better way to practice patient care in my workplace has been discovered and descriptions of the steps required to implement this change are reflected upon. My organization encourages changes that promote the safety and quality of care of our clients as long as it is supported by the evidence. L.L. (personal communication, March 16, 2016) stated that the procedure involves an intensive process involving; the initiation of a burning issue or problem of nursing, working with a mentor to develop the project, receiving approval from the evidence-based practice (EBP) committee and a nurse scientist, providing an extensive review of supporting literature research and reviews that links the issue with interventions and outcomes, conduct a test of change and evaluate this practice change and either adopt or adopt, reevaluate or reject this change, second review of the EBP committee that recommend this change to nursing practice. This is an elaborate and step-by-step process that presents reputable and factual evidence that clearly supports proposed interventions that will improve the delivery of safe and effective care. The recent adoption of the Ambulatory Team reflects how a burning issue can revolve into a practice that will improve patient recovery. This quick search provided over 373 articles from 2012 for me to research and provide evidence of the effectiveness of this new practice. Early ambulation occurring within 24 hours post-surgical has shown shorter hospital stays and decrease rate of readmissions (Van der Leeden et al., 2016). Even though there is widespread agreement of those in the medical community that early ambulation is extremely beneficial to the post-surgical patient, the hectic environment of health care and time constraints of the nurses and physical therapists may prevent patients from this process (Le, Khankhanian, Joshi, Maa, & Crevensten, 2014). The new best practice initiative by my organization has provided a practice that will fulfill this gap in service by creating the Ambulatory Team. Their sole focus is to get patients moving, especially post-surgical ones, and allowing nurses and physical therapists the ability to focus on those with complex conditions. These are a few examples from the literature that supports and recognizes how the practice of early ambulation has on the health and wellness of post-surgical patients.
