I had my fifth and sixth night shifts this past week. The fifth shift was rather busy we had four patients and overall the unit had a high census. During that shift I had two patients with GI bleeds who were both being prepped for a colonoscopy the following morning, a patient who was admitted half way through the shift with suspected infection, and the last patient. We were constantly moving and barely got a chance to rest besides for our lunch break. The sixth shift was still rather busy with a three patients including a 79 year old woman with exacerbation of CHF with history of obesity and mild COPD, a 88 year old women diagnosed with pneumonia with history of stroke, dementia, and dysphasia, and a 60 year old …show more content…
The first one I achieved was personal learning objective #2: by end of semester I will demonstrate effective time management by providing holistic care for at least 2 of the three patients without the help or assistance of my preceptor. During the second shift this week I took care of two of the three patients that were assigned to Ellie. I was in charge of vitals, wound care, medication administration, and any other treatments the patients needed during my shift. In addition I also completed all the documentation for both of the patients. It was a lot of work, but such a good experience for me. To be able to complete all my assessments and treatments I needed to plan out my night to effectively manage my time. I used discernment to decide the order of my assessments and actions. Along with personally using discernment I am learning a lot from observing and discussing the scenarios with Ellie. I am learning discernment through shadowing Ellie and watching her use proper discernment. Preceptor discernment is crucial in establishing competent nursing practice for student nurses training for entry-level practice (Paton & Binding, 2010). I believe Ellie is showing me proper discernment skills, which are preparing me to begin my career as a new nurse. Discernment is not only an important quality for a nurse, but a leaser as well. In leadership roles you must show sound decision-making skills in your practice to serve as a role model for others, but also in the decisions that are being made for the group (Marquis & Huston, 2015). A leader is not only in charge of making decisions for what they believe is best. They are also in charge of putting the interest of the group first and ensuring the group is involved in the decision making process (Marquis & Huston, 2015). It is important that in nursing I not only use my own personal judgment, but work with others to cohesively decide what is the highest priority
