In the case of the State of Washington’s EDIE database, information technology and systems support helped in managing the EDIE data. It organized, stored, assessed, analyzed, and interpreted patient data whenever they visited the Emergency room. The data in the EDIE database became information and then knowledge to physicians which supported them in making fast decisions on patients admitted to the emergency room. Thus, having a well-managed database puts an organization at a competitive advantage. The emergency visits dropped as well as substantial amount of the state’s Medicaid costs.…
CRS Case Study: Effective or Ineffective The use of health care management systems (HMIS) have exploded over the years, which new systems have been created to work with each other. The purpose of these systems has been generated to increase productivity as well as improve on patient care. There are specific components and to each system, which all have their own purpose and goal for improved production. The purpose for research and case studies are to show which systems are more effective than others as well as what improvements can be made for future use.…
Clinical Decision Making Pathophysiology: Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) A cerebral vascular accident (CVA) is defined as “a sudden loss of brain functioning from a disruption of blood supply to a part of the brain causing temporary or permanent loss of movement, thought, memory, speech, or sensation”(Belleza, 2016, p. 1). CVA is categorized as ischemic or hemorrhagic.…

"For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of our economy calls for action: bold and swift. And we will act not only to create new jobs but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its costs” (President Barrack Obama, Inaugural Address, 2009).…
The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act) of 2009 was established to promote electronic medical record (EMR) adoption and electronic health information exchange. Furthermore, incentives and penalties were fixed to invoke health organizations to install EMR programs and achieve meaningful use standards set forth by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Overall, the HITECH Act and Meaningful use standards were created to improve quality of care, patient safety, and public health. In order to verify the outcome we will investigate the effects of computerized physician order entry (CPOE), computerized decision support systems (CDDSs), use of statistical reports, and health information…
Choosing the appropriate EMR (electronic medical record) vendor is essential to a successful transition from paper records to electronic medical records. Many factors must be weighed in this selection process. One method to help hospitals and practices make this complex decision is to complete a cost-benefit analysis. Entire books have been written on how to conduct cost-benefit analysis and an in-depth analysis goes well beyond the scope of this paper. Instead, this discussion will focus on how cost-benefit analysis can help to determine an appropriate EMR vendor.…
The books Your Medical Mind by Drs. Jerome Groopman and Pamela Hartzband and Happiness in a Storm by Dr. Wendy Harpham discuss two different approaches to medical decision making. Medical decisions are not only decisions patients make in life or death situations but also the mundane decisions patients make routinely, such as whether to ingest an allergy pill. In our technologically dependent age, patients face many challenges when attempting to make the best possible medical decision for them. For example, the media, internet, disagreeing experts, and even personal anecdotes we hear influence our decisions by instigating or hindering us from picking a certain plan of treatment.…
As a whole we are seeing many hospital systems move towards technology when delivering care to each patient. By doing in helps to reduce potential errors, provided a higher level of care, and streamlines the processes being utilized. This article summarized how these systems can reduce errors that can occur and ensures a base level of care can be provided to…
Importance of usability test: After reviewing the above articles, the results suggested that before implementing CDSS or any new interventions of CDSS, it is extremely important to conduct a usability test and redesign the system based on the feedbacks given by the end-users. The studies included in this paper all had different reasons and location of the healthcare but one thing that was common was the idea of having a system which is user friendly and easy to use and at the same time improves quality of care. Table 1 includes the purpose of each paper and its results. Usability testing was done in an iterative process in all the studies, except one. After initial designing, the system was evaluated by the end-users.…
The review of literature consequently almost always points towards a positive results with exception of cases with benign cases while implementing CDSS to reduce the number of inappropriate or redundant tests. The results not only indicate a significant reduction in the unnecessary tests but, also provides evidence of substantial cost savings that will turn out to be crucial in the healthcare cost settings. Moreover, this reduction of tests will result in better treatment with reduced number of misinterpretations. It can be learned from the literature that CDSS is most effective when implemented in an integrated HIS system which will gather information from various sources and departments to give proper suggestions at proper times. It can…
The aim of this essay is to discuss and assess a given case scenario where, the chosen patient admitted with acute headache and vomiting with intermittent confusion. This essay will define clinical judgement and decision-making; discuss importance of decision-making process in the assessment of patient’s care. It will also mention some of the theories about clinical decision-making in nursing practice and explain Tanner’s 2008 clinical judgement model that will apply in critically reviewing patient’s complex needs and assessing care plan and interventions. Further, this essay will demonstrate how effective sharing decision-making might enhance patient’s recovery, prevent deterioration. There also NHS mantra “no decision about me without me”…
The obstacles I face in completing my HIT/QI project research were: 1. I was having a hard time on how am I going to apply the SDLC phases to my topic, which is about patient privacy. I know that it is important to use SDLC phase when acquiring a new health information system, but I am not sure how am I going to apply the SDLC phase when developing security policies. 2. Creating a SMART and Meaningful objectives was not easy.…
