One of the first climaxes of the story is Dantes daring escape from prison. He is under the impression that will be a simple escape. He would be buried, then he would rise from the ground. Little did he know at the Château d’If, their prisoners get a watery grave. His legs are tied to a cannon ball and he is thrown into the water. During his time in the prison Dantes had sworn vengeance against the men who had wronged him. Yet he had also tried to kill himself in prison. In this time period, if someone is challenged to a duel it is a fight to the death. One of the two characters we have grown to love will die soon. Mercedes comes and begs the count not to kill Albert. Meaning that he will be the one to die. The end leaves us with many questions. Will the count stay true to his promise to Mercedes? The woman did betray him before. Is her happiness really worth his life? Or would the count go against his word and kill Albert?
