Climate Gate
For many years there has been a great debate between scientists who believe that human activity has major negative effects on climate change, and those who argue that climate change is caused by a variety of factors, not just harmful human activity. Those who support that belief that activities such as the burning of fossil fuels could cause disastrous climate changes and global warming disagree with those who believe that research has been skewed to alter the way findings are presented. The fiercely debated topic has generated a need for action based on the involvement of politicians and when and how climate change should be addressed by local, state, and the federal government. This new scandal, combined with a huge body of science and economics ignored or deliberately concealed by the alarmists, proves that the large majority of Americans were right all along” (Bast, 2009). Because each side of climate change was so intent on discrediting the other side, the International Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was established. The International Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was established and commissioned with the very specific purpose of “evaluating the climate change projections and make recommendations to governments.” (Robert F. Phalen, 2013). The IPCC used data from different sources to make their determination, but much of their data was supplied by the research done by the CRU scientists. “The release of these documents creates an opportunity for reporters, academics, politicians and others who relied on the IPCC to form their opinion about global warming to stop and reconsider their position” (Bast, 2009). The CRU scientists assessed that temperature data suggested that anthropogenic activities did in fact negatively influence temperature change and the IPCC supported the data and the …show more content…
There are three stages that crisis management consists of which are: Crisis prevention, Identification of the posed threat/crisis, and finally crisis handling and crisis termination. Although the head of the Climate Research Unit stepped down from his position amid the international scandal, the investigations that were launched after the emails were exposed were not able to come up with any proof that there was any missing, hidden, false, or misrepresented data. In stepping down from the head position this was what was best for the organization and the public views of those in power associated. The brand and credibility of this organization was tainted when these emails were released and what seemed to be falsified information exposed. While some of the communications came across as defensive and unprofessional, the facts of the research remained true. Temperatures across the earth are steadily climbing and direct correlation with the rise of carbon dioxide emissions, and the burning of fossil fuels. This helped to bolster and defend arguments that the data provided should speak for itself. Those who doubted the existence of climate change could not pinpoint an instance to back their claims that Climate Change scientists were altering information when given the opportunity to do
