The Effects of Climate Change in Alaska
Climate change, is it real or is it a hoax? If you live in Alaska maybe you’ve noticed environmental changes such as glaciers gradually melting, or maybe you’ve visited the village of Kaktovik and saw the polar bears that are new to the area (Goode, 2016). Perhaps you’ve recently moved to a new city because your last home was to inconvenient for you to make it to work on time. Well for the people of Shishmaref, they recently decided to move from their home due to erosion and flooding caused by climate change (Mele & Victor, 2016). Some easy ways to help reduce our carbon foot prints is to unplug electronics we aren’t using such as TVs, game consoles, and lighting. A more popular way to help reduce greenhouse gases is to change to renewable energy instead of using fossil fuels. Solar panels, wind mills, and hydropower are ways to collect energy without being harmful to the environment. If you use a vehicle that uses gas, you can always jog or bike where you need to go. Another way to reduce the carbon footprint and keep you healthy is to avoid processed foods since up to 18% of greenhouse gases come from dairy and meat production.
To wrap this up, climate change has already made a huge impact in Alaska and there might be no hope to reduce the hotter weather we have gained with global warming, we can save what we have and reduce our carbon footprints. By thinking green and helping to reduce greenhouse gases we will be able to preserve our current Earth for future generations, save species like polar bears, and be able to preserve
