One of the many significant accomplishments of humans is the discovery of fossil fuels and its use for energy in the 1800s. The discovery of this fuel changed the world of industry; ever since this discovery, the concentration and emission of greenhouse gases have increased significantly in the atmosphere. Burning fossil fuel for energy releases large, unhealthy amounts of carbon dioxide into the air. According to the Intergovernmental Panel, “industrial activities that our modern civilization spends upon have raised atmospheric carbon dioxide levels from 280 parts per million to 379 parts per million in the last 150 years.” (Shaftel, 2015) Stanford climate scientists Noah Diffenbaugh and Chris Field also report that climate change will occur 10 times faster in the next century than any change recorded in the past 65 million years. (Carey, 2013) It is dangerous for the planet to be going through such a large shift in climate within a small period of time because the environment, ecosystems, and human beings will have difficulty adapting.
In addition to the high increase in CO2 emissions over the past century, other factors have contributed to global warming. One of these is the loss of photosynthetic organisms. This means that organic material that goes through photosynthesis, such as trees, plants, and phytoplankton(plant-like …show more content…
The United States still faces an electorate where 40% of Americans in a Pew Research Center poll do not believe that humans have caused such drastic changes in climate. This huge misinforming of the American People is mostly due to media on the side of the right. Right Wing news stations such as FOX, as well as their republican political supporters, generally deny that climate change is human related, and sometimes, even deny its existence overall. Rush Limbaugh, a host on FOX, advised his religious listeners to choose between God and science on his radio show on August 12th, saying, “if you believe in God, then intellectually you cannot believe in manmade global warming … You must be either agnostic or atheistic to believe that man controls something he can’t create.” This use of religion in a way to spread denial of important issues teaches citizens to view global warming as insignificant and false. Another example of someone who uses influences the public to believe global warming is not an issue is Jeb Bush. Bush, like most prominent members of the Republican Party, won 't accept the science of climate change. When asked if he believed that global warming was primarily man-made, Bush claimed, "I 'm a skeptic. I 'm not a scientist." Bush’s statement hints that
