How the Internet Affects Users? The Internet is one of the greatest utilities in the world. Most people in the world use the Internet every single day for school, work or entertainment. The Internet affects society in a positive way but being on the web too long can be harmful as stated in Clifford Stoll’s essay “Isolated by the Internet.” In his essay, Stoll discusses the affects of excessive Internet use. Stoll believes that too much Internet leads to depression and isolation. He writes about an experiment that followed many different families who use the Internet. The investigation was conducted by Robert Kraut and Vicki Lundmark, they followed 96 families for two years to see the affects of Internet on all the families’ social life. Kraut and Lundmark found that people developed relationships online but they were weak relationships that did not mean anything. Also it was discovered that there was less communication within the families, they became less social, they did not go out as much and they did not interact with others. People who spend a great amount of time on the Internet start to become more distant from friends and family. The time people waste on the Internet could be used for talking with family or going out with friends. Personally I have used the Internet a lot and I can say it has made me less social. I never came out of my room to talk to my family because I was playing games and browsing the Internet. I always used to cancel plans with friends because I did not want to get off the Internet. Many people have been where I have, they never get off the Internet. No one wants to go out any more because everything can be done online. For example, less people go out to shop because it can be done online. People don’t get together to go to the mall because of the internet and the ability to shop online. People are starting to avoid going out with others because of their addiction to the
