Throughout medieval times, variables such as wealth, gender roles and the growing concern of witchcraft challenged the authority of the Church. Because each of these themes are unique to their circumstances and elicited different if not similar responses from both those involved and those observing, it is relevant to detect and understand why these different events took place, and what became of the people who drove these actions. In chapters four, five and six of Deane’s A History of Medieval Heresy and Inquisition, each of these themes respectively was discussed in detail. The first of the previously mentioned concepts that challenged the authority of the Church is wealth. This was problematic as a good Christian was thought to have few worldly possessions and pride, however once in power, the men of the church had an abundance of these.…

The Crusades is defined as a medieval military expedition, one of a series made by Europeans to recover the Holy Land from the Muslims in the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries. The Question surrounding the crusades is whether it was caused by the devotion of religion or for the desire of political and economical gain. The crusades may of seemed like they were based around the idea of greed throughout the Catholic church but really it was based on God and how he got the people through such tough times. The primary reason for these crusades was religious devotion including many factors like their love of religion and faith. This devotion of religion and faith in the time of the crusades is expressed in a collection of documents written by different historians that lived in this time…

God’s work in his followers is a divine divine undertaking in which man becomes more like Christ and less like the world. The procedural nature of sanctification is exemplified in the journey of Spenser’s…

The Wife of Bath is the enigma of every century when it comes to religion and sexuality, especially the one in which she exists. She manages to maintain both religious and sexual personas. The Wife of Bath’s Prologue includes both religious and sexual elements even though they are in direct conflict with each other. It also utilizes both religious quotes and sexual innuendos in an effort to better represent what the character is actually like and the paradox in which she defies some social norms while conforming to others.…

Martin Luther’s weren’t the only reforms that swept Europe in the early 1500s. He had come to his conclusions a tortured soul, desperately searching for a way to be redeemed in the eyes of God. But those same conclusions were reached by another, and not from the perspective of a tortured soul, but from the scholarly pursuit of truth. The teachings of Ulrich Zwingli affected Switzerland much the same as Luther’s affected Germany, but not even these great reformers were prepared for the Anabaptist movement.
