Client Advocacy Paper

There are many ways in which one can advocate for the counseling profession as well as clients. I noticed that counselors I have spoken to view the advocacy they perform to be the work they conduct with clients. Specifically, the community agency I interviewed, Family Resources, considered the work they conduct to ensure local families have appropriate resources and care as a critical aspect of their advocacy efforts in the field. The interview with the agency highlighted the importance counselors place on their client’s welfare. They consider their role as client advocate to be the reason they work as counselors. In addition, Family Resources are actively involved in sharing ideas with other agencies in Allegheny County to improve the field …show more content…
It is common knowledge that we are living with an aging population but it is no less alarming that the elderly’s mental health care is not sufficient for the growing population. It seems to me to be an obvious solution to ensure that more qualified and capable counselors close the gap in mental health care in this area. However the reality is that LPCs and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) still cannot access Medicare for their services. I chose this topic to attempt to make a difference in changing the status quo and challenging those who are able to enact change on a systematic level. It felt especially powerful writing to my own senators and seeking his co-sponsorship for Medicare inclusion for counselors and therapists. Conducting the research for this assignment and becoming educated about the challenges counselors face has given me impetus to make a difference in my own capacity, as my efforts combined with others will effect change. Erford (2018) asserts counselors have become valued professionals through continuous advocacy efforts (p. 440). It is through advocacy education that awareness is created and a stirring in those who want to make a difference will propel the profession forward. Conversely, inaction does not benefit the public nor …show more content…
Specifically, through my research on advocacy in the profession I have more clarity on pressing issues such as the inability for LPCs, LMFTs and Licensed Social Workers (LSWs) to be fully independent and experience equality with insurance companies in their efforts to diagnosis mental health disorders and illnesses as other similar professionals in Pennsylvania are. The Pennsylvania Counseling Association is actively involved in Bill SB530 which confronts this issue directly and calls for equity and parity in credentialing from insurance companies (Pennsylvania Counseling Association, 2018, para 7). Furthermore, my investigations also brought my attention to the issue of conversion therapy and current and active advocacy to ban it in the United States. Upon some reflection, this too would be an important area of advocacy I will seek to engage in. Through my engagement in this project, I have learned that writing to my local government representatives is a helpful method of advocacy, and I will continue to write to the legislators about issues the profession encounters. I will use the Stephanie T Burns website suggested in the textbook which offers helpful tips and advice on how to advocate (Erford, 2018, p. 451). My intent is to remain aware of the challenges the profession faces and contribute to the advancement

I have learned that I can never assume things about a person or situation. I also learned that I should do research on my clients background and try to gain understanding about what goes on in their lives and why they react the way they do. One major mistake the social worker made was over stepping her professional boundaries. This in particular showed me that I have to be always mindful of agency policy, and not get too attached to a client. Faith Harper’s story gave great insight into social work practice, and I will attempt to go above and beyond to help all women in Faith’s…

Comparing Codes of Ethics The very nature of the counseling profession places professional counselors in close proximity with people, information, and influence. Due to this, ethical dilemmas can arise throughout the course of this work. To help aid in the protection of counselors, and to provide a framework for ethical practice, ethical codes have been developed and instituted within the profession. As Beuchamp and Childress stated (as cited in Calley, 2009), “in the counseling profession, ethical standards are required to protect clients, guide professional behavior, ensure the autonomy of professionals, increase the status of the profession, enhance the client 's and the community 's trust in the profession, and articulate collegial conduct between professionals,” (p. 476).…

Family Functioning Through Child Welfare is an evidence, strength based model originally designated for treating delinquency, substance abuse and violence for high risk youth. The model now serves as a more intensive alternative in prevention programs for families with children of all ages dealing with various issues beyond delinquency. The program has two intervention tracks, high risk assigned to Therapists and low risks assigned to Interventionists. Though all cases are considered high risks, Interventionists link to community resources as opposed to Therapists who teach the skills themselves. The goal of the program is to reduce out of home placement by reducing risk factors and improving family functioning through home based interventions that are specific to the family’s unique challenges, strengths and their relational…

Techniques and Interventions I often use free association with most of my clients. Many of my clients are hesitant to come to counseling and suffer from some form of low self-esteem. In using free association I am giving the client power to lead the session and it will “help the client learn more about what he or she thinks and feels in a nonjudgmental, accepting atmosphere” (Capuzzi & Gross, 2011, P. 67). If the client feels that they are not being judged, then they are more likely to face the conflict between what they need and their unconscious fears. I use the analyzing resistance technique with the client to address their self-sabotage in their view of themselves as the presenting problem.…

According to The National Association of Social Workers, statistic project that by the year 2030, the number of individuals ranging in age from 65 or older is expected to double, equaling a total of 70 million (Aging, n.d.). This increase in the elderly population creates the need for counselors to have vast knowledge related to aging individuals as challenges regarding environmental, social, psychological, health care, and economics continue. Stereotypes A study done in 1986 by Schmidt and Boland asked undergraduates to identify terms, both positive and negative, that they associate with elderly individuals.…

Ethical Challenges Related to Practice Apprehensions of the complexities involving the various scenarios that I will face when working with clients have been one of the biggest concerns that remain on my mind as I continue to be groomed into becoming an effective, professional counselor. With the substantiated knowledge throughout our studies that counselors are to protect the welfare of the clients we serve, with his or her best interest on the forefront, I can safely say that I do not believe that remaining respectful of clients and faithful to the established ACA Code of Ethics (Remley & Herlihy, 2016, pp. 399-431) for professional counselors, will be a challenge that I cannot meet, especially as it pertains to my morals, ethics and values. However, I do know that trials will surface upon my career path in the future, which will test my loyalty to the profession, such as the Catch-22 predicament that Edward faced with Ms. Wilcox, as described in the example, 1-2 - The Case of Edward (Remley & Herlihy, 2016, p. 9). Edward was charged with deciding if…
