Consequently, more people came out against the community, creating hostility throughout the nation. One of these people is named Anita Bryant, a woman who repealed a gay-rights legislation in Miami and had nothing but cruel words against the young generation of gay men struggling to come out (Whirry). This caused the Gay Rights Movement to work even harder against the discrimination, especially with leaders like Harvey Milk and Cleve Jones. Cleve Jones first handedly dealt with discrimination from his own family. Because of this, Jones felt alone and angry at the world because of the unfairness, but through this he found to love activism (Zinn 185). Since Jones had a personal experience with discrimination, he believed that others should not go through the same thing. Being an activist takes a lot of hard work and commitment, but is the best way to take a stand because it is more effective. He became a great influence to the movement and helped make the LGBT community known. The community was overlooked and was not even much of a community until the 1970’s. People were worried and stressed about if there were other people like them. “... He was personally attacked which made the problem within the LGBT community more relatable, giving him the passion he needed in order to accomplish such an impact in this country. The LGBT community had no recognition and was pushed off to the side when issues rose to the surface within the community. Cleve Jones realized this and created awareness, reaching across the country and inspired people to stand with him in the fight for research for AIDS. The research for AIDS came along with the recognition for the LGBT community because people did not want to acknowledge that there was a problem because it involved gay people. The government allowed thousands of men to die because they did not want to address this issue.
