Clerks Character Analysis

According to Netflix I spent one hundred and eighty-four minutes total watching Kevin Smith’s movie, Clerks. In the first involuntary hour and thirty-two minutes it was easy to catch on to the self-absorbed attitudes, poor work ethic, and New Jersey accents. But, any dedicated movie watcher knows you learn more the second screening. Throughout the next showing I carefully analyzed the different themes. As there was so many to choose from, I made it clearn to myself that I did not want to be like everyone else. Kevin Smith used some of these insightful scenes to capture and exaggerate a hidden meaning of the seven deadly sins. In this first scene Dante is standing behind the desk at his job of a store clerk. A customer presumes in asking …show more content…
While reading the newspaper announcements, Caitlin 's engagement startle Dante. Even though Dante has Veronika, his obsessing hangup on Caitlyn still exists and Dante cannot see how good he truly has it. In this scene Caitlyn comes waltzing back into Dante’s workplace claiming she had to come home to knowing Dante had to have seen the engagement article. Caitlyn has always had Dante on a set of strings like a puppet, she was well aware that if Dante saw the article he might stop obsessing over her and move on like any normal person. Yet, Caitlyn is in set on the idea of keeping Dante to himself and has to have all control over him. It is a pattern you notice throughout the film, as Dante explains their past and current relationship. Yet, as soon as Caitlyn continues to justify her intentions, Dante drops everything to continue this “could be” relationship with Caitlyn. This is an example of lust, as Dante denies to think about his current girlfriend, Veronica. Falling into the burning desire to be with Caitlyn, Dante displays the deadly sin …show more content…
With all good intentions, Randal decides to tell Veronica that Dante does not love her anymore and would like to pursue a relationship with ex girlfriend, Caitlyn. While Veronica beats Dante with her purse due to the news of her coward of a boyfriend, she slips that Randal told her all of this. As Randal believes he just helped Dante, he walks in the store nonchalantly believing he just did him a favor. This turns into the horribly acted, but incredibly hilarious fight scene between Dante and Randal. After the thirty second long scene featuring Dante choking Randal and Randal hitting Dante in the face with a loaf of bread, they settle down. Randal proceeds to explain to Dante that he was just helping him since he can never initiate change by himself. Aggressive expressions rise out of Dante after Randal insists that Dante did not have to choke him, “ Oh please, I 'm surprised I didn’t kill you” . Randal remains confused and questions Dante for his actions, unaware of what he did wrong. Infuriated Dante starts in on Randal “What don 't you do wrong?”.As Dante passes along the blame for his issues it is obvious that Randal starts to become frustrated. Then Dante repeats his famous line “ I 'm not even supposed to be here today”, this causes Randal to snap. Randal tells off Dante explaining how Dante believes that the entire world rests on his

Dante, though doesn’t really respond at first and states that Ugolino deserves what he has received. Dante also says “you the scandal of the peoples of that fair land where si is heard, because you and your neighbors are so slow to punish you” (Canto XXXIII; 79). Dante sates this just before he changes the topic with Ugolino about finding Virgil. By Dante doing this it shows that he has become less inclined to feel sympathy to the people in hell, because Dante does not talk about how he feels bad for Ugolino, or that he feels that Ugolino was wrong. This change in Dante’s personality is just the start in Dante’s overall change of becoming a different person through his…
