Clerks 2 Analysis

As humans, we all have a need for a fulfilling life. How one determines what is a “fulfilling life” is what differs from person to person. This strive for a meaningful, satisfying life is portrayed in different movies. Clerks 2 is an indie comedy about two lifelong friends that work at Mooby’s, a fast food restaurant, after the Quick Stop, the convenience store they worked at for over a decade, sets on fire. The two have grown up in a small town in New Jersey their whole life, and the main character Dante has always felt like he has not lived the life that he wanted. It is Dante’s last day in New Jersey because he found a girl that can give him everything he ever wanted. She is beautiful and perky, with rich parents that offer Dante a job in …show more content…
Although they both declare a need to flee their home, and to start over, they decide against it. From The Wizard of Oz, there is of course the most famous line, “There’s no place like home.” But Dorothy goes as far as saying, “I know that if I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own back yard. Because if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with.” Dorothy is saying that home offers this place of love, something that you cannot find in other places, even beautiful magical places. This idea was also used in Clerks 2. In the end, Dante ends up buying the Quick Stop with Randall and staying in New Jersey. He has the opportunity to move on with his life, and to live the “ideal” lifestyle but he denies it for what he already has. When in jail, Randall says to him, “You’re my best friend and I love you, in a totally heterosexual way. Please don’t leave me.” After this, Dante decides to stay. Like The Wizard of Oz, Clerks 2 shows the importance of love and how it affects life satisfaction. Life satisfaction does not depend on where you are, but if you have people that care about you and love …show more content…
Dante has this image in his head of what the perfect life is. He never stops to think about his life and his surroundings. Randal views their lifestyle as, “I got to watch movies, fuck with assholes and hang out with my best friend all day, can you not think of a better way to make a living? Yeah maybe it wasn’t what everyone does but it was pretty fucking good.” In reality, Dante’s life was never that unappealing. He had people that loved him in New Jersey and he definitely had a good time working at the Quick Stop with his best friend. The reason why Dante always stayed in New Jersey was not because he had no escape, it was because New Jersey was his home. People often think that in order to be happy they have to be in an exciting place like Florida or Oz, when in reality all you need in life is this essence of comfort. Home is where you are comfortable and where you feel like you can be yourself because there are people that love you for who you are. Albeit, there is a negative aspect to this “There’s no place like home” motto. This could be used as an excuse to hold oneself back. Yes, Dante made a decision that would keep him happy in life but there may be a part of him that wonders what would have happened in Florida. Home will always be there, but opportunities will not. Although security and safety is essential to a gratifying life, it is important to find comfort in new situations

If I were to tell you to watch a film about men in prison, what would you think? most people would think it’s another ordinary Hollywood flick. His journey takes ten years to complete. Unlike Odysseus whose journey is physical in the Inferno, Dante’s journey encompasses the struggle between good and evil within himself. Dante see’s the afterlife as consisting of three level heaven, purgatory and hell.…

Dante’s Inferno is a classic example of an individual benefitting from the struggles of a community, evidenced by the warnings given him by the tortured souls he encounters. As the hero of an epic, Dante is markedly different than Gilgamesh or Aeneas. He makes no claim of divine parentage, though the implication that he is going to paradise does lend him some measure of invulnerability in his struggle. In keeping with the trend of further humanizing epic heroes, Dante is presented as the most lifelike hero to date. He struggles with the horrors he witnesses, and his empathy for the sinners causes him to faint on several occasions.…

Released in 1955, To Catch a Thief was one of three films director Alfred Hitchcock produced within an eighteenth month period and was the result of a collaboration with rising screenwriter John Michael Hayes, whom he had previously worked with on Rear Window. Quickly written and produced, the film is about retired cat-burglar John Robie, who after being framed for a ring of jewel thefts in the French Riviera, seeks to find the real culprit, while evading the police and the romantic advances of Francie Stevens, the daughter of a potential, wealthy theft victim. In its dramatic structure, Hayes’ screenplay emphasizes the dual nature of the story–as Robie seeks to “catch” the real thief in spite of receiving written threats not to, he must also evade Francie–who seeks to “catch” a romantic partner in Robie and can report him to the police. During the early production of Rear Window, Hitchcock became intrigued by To Catch a Thief, a novel by David Dodge (DeRosa 90).…

Also, in Kill Bill, Tarantino works with the locations where it is hard to know with the places are real or they are CGI effects. This happens because Tarantino uses his editing style to create this feeling of fantasy mixed with the real actors creating an uncomfortable feeling which keep us asking to ourselves “What is real and what is not?” The props used are quite funny, because it reinforces this idea of fantasy. For example, in scenes when bodies start bleeding it feels like we are watching a cartoon because of the amount of blood spurted is totally off the reality. “Moreover the comic scenes of death with very obvious, fake blood make the whole film gentle in a way that cruel death is not controversial.”…
