Beginnings:
Cleopatra VII Queen of Egypt was born around 69 B.C.E. (Cleopatra a Biography by Duane W. Roller pg. 15). She was born into a long line of Ptolemaic Kings and is considered to be the very last Macedonian Greek Queen to rule Egypt (Roller pg. 15). Her father was Ptolemy XII, no one is sure who her mother is and to this day she is still unknown, but she is thought to have been a part of the Egyptian Priestly Family of Ptah (Roller pg. 15). It is believed that it was her half Egyptian mother (because she is believed to be Macedonian as well) who educated Cleopatra on Egypt and instilled a respect for Egypt that the person who ruled before her did not have (Roller pg.15). 16). Her sister’s names were Berenike IV and Arsinoe IV, and it was Cleopatra and her two sisters who carried the most powerful female names of the dynasty (Roller pg. 16). Berenike is the eldest of the three sisters, and is considered to be the only daughter of Cleopatra VI; she was crowned Queen by a party during her father’s exile (Roller pg. 16). Berenike was than later killed by her father while he was traveling back from exile (Roller pg. 16). Arsinoe who was the youngest of the three sisters was crowned queen of Cyprus by Julius Caesar, and later turned into an enemy of Cleopatra who then requested that Arsinoe be killed (Roller pg. 16). Her brother’s names were Ptolemy XIII and Ptolemy XIV, and though it was known that both brothers ruled alongside Cleopatra they both fell into the needs of Cleopatra for her rule of the dynasty (Roller pg. 16). None of her sibling’s deaths were by natural causes and as a child growing up Cleopatra would never know that her father would be the very last male ruler in his Ptolemaic line; and though Cleopatra had children none of them would grow up to rule after her (Roller pgs. 16

In Crawford's passage, Who was Cleopatra?, she tells of Cleopatra and how she became the ruler of Egypt at the time. The entire passage doesn't stay on topic of the claim though, throughout the whole passage she tells different things about Cleopatra, but its not all about how she was a strong leader who could match other leaders' skills and abilities during that time. Crawford hardly stays on the same topic about Cleopatra at all in the passage. She jumps from telling about one thing about her to telling something completely different. For example, in paragraph 2, she tells of how Cleopatra sneaks into the palace to take the throne from Caesar.…

“When everything seemed lost, the heirs of the house of Ptolemy would suddenly have almost put within their grasp a dominion stretching not only over the lost ancestral lands, but over wider territories than Ptolemy I or Ptolemy II or Ptolemy III had ever dreamed of. Those kings, being men, had based their dominion on the power of their arms; but now, when the military power of Egypt would bring to the contest power of a wholly different kind-the power of a fascinating woman.” E.R. Bevan, The House of Ptolemy Foreword: Since there is no first-hand account of the history of Cleopatra VII, many of the details of her life remain a mystery. The lack of written evidence may be due in part to the fact that the Library of Alexandria in Egypt’s capital was burned down in 48 B.C.E. The stories surrounding Cleopatra’s exploits have been told and retold for centuries, and there are many conflicting versions.…
