Cleo Movie Essay

In Agnes Varda’s from Cleo from 5 to 7, we are presented with a strong lead female role and depicted of two hours of this young pop singer’s life. As Professor Grundmann said, “Varda was known as the Mother of the French New Wave. She created cinema from female view and her feminist concerns set her apart from other directors.” Most of the films created during the period of the French New Wave were male dominated, as well as the actors. In the film, Cleo nervously awaits the results of some medical exams. From the beginning, she is extremely pessimistic and fully believes that she will die soon. They just assumed she was saying this to attract more attention, no one took her seriously and just believed she was faking it and would continue with their actions. She plays along with the woman stereotypes, such as beauty is everything, that are depicted continuously telling herself “as long as I’m beautiful, I’m alive.” This shows that beauty aesthetics were at the center of their thoughts; if woman believed they were beautiful, they felt alive. Once that beauty they saw in themselves would fade away, they considered that the termination of their life. With Cleo’s elegant attire and impeccable looks, she always looked stunning. Even when she was feeling that her death was coming soon, she would look in the mirror and dress up and present herself very stylish. Despite her negativity and death approaching feeling, she still went out and bought herself a new black hat. Even though her maid told her it was summertime and that she should not buy anything new on a Tuesday for it is bad luck, Cleo was persistent with proceeding with the purchase.
