Draper supports her claim by illustrating the life of Andy Jackson, the protagonist, with his friends B.J and Tyrone who witnessed a traumatic and horrendous accident in which Andy’s best friend Robert Washington dies, this affected everyone in different ways. Collections 3 Task Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, The Metamorphosis, by Franz Kafka, and “Magic Island”, by Cathy Song, are all literary works that explore how people respond to change in their lives. The characters in all three works face challenging circumstances, like difficulties coping with an ever changing life, a terrifying physical transformation, or a brand new environment. For example, in The Metamorphosis, Gregor, the main character, wakes up to find that he has morphed into a bug. Gregory chooses to react to this drastic change by simply ignoring the consequences it could have on his life. Similarly in the other two texts change is viewed negatively, because when the characters encounter change they react and act poorly.…

My interpretation of what poetry is most likely the same as what anyone else it is thinking; whatever the poet at the time wants it to be. Poetry is open to anything. It can express anger, happiness, hatred, fear, love, passion, joy and any other form of expressions known to man. Before this assignment I was not big on poetry outside of when it was required to read in school. I decided on the poem “To Change the World Enough” by Alice Walker, mainly because I was able to understand most of what the poem was saying.…

Self-worth is something that can be hard to earn and is easy to lose; tribulation can easily take esteem of one’s self away. In the short story “Boys and Girls,” author Alice Munro establishes the idea that when strong tribulation originating from elements of setting burdens characters then individuals’ resilience is destroyed, which results in the destruction of self-worth. This is seen specifically with the antagonist, who is a young girl, and struggles against the expectations of her mother and others around her that she needs to be ladylike. The girl resists the change, but slowly and both subconsciously and consciously changes to what she resists; as she changes she succumbs to the destruction of her self worth.…

Poetry – Critical Essay Relationships between two people can be one of the most dangerous but important human experiences in life. Poets explore relationships using their own developed ideas and styles. Michelle Williams in ‘Friendless’ conveys the abusive power of a man which conflicts with the utterly depressing relationship between a dying mother and son in ‘Mother in a Refugee’. Likewise to ‘Friendless’, ‘The Child Who Walks Backwards’ by Lorna Crozier is also about abuse and physical power. All the poets express their visions through the different ideas, circumstances and situations.…
