An item of remembrance that captures identity in our family is a statue of a Peruvian citizen with a cleft palate. This statue has a profound history in my family. My grandfather is a plastic surgeon and he decided to use his God-given talents to serve people in developing countries. He created an organization in Peru to surgically fix children with clef-lips. My grandpa takes his sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, and more to Peru every year to experience the opportunity to surgically operate and change people’s lives. Once you go down to Peru you get a statue passed down of a native with a cleft-lip.
