Clearwater Beach

The lines at the airport stretched to what looked like the ends of the Earth. People were milling about the security clearance and heading off to their flights. From the balcony area of the DIA, all I could think about was how easy it was for me, a six year old, to get lost among the crowd. I made sure to keep a very close watch on my parents so I didn’t get forgotten as we made our way through baggage and security. We tugged our carry-on bags through the narrow aisle until we found our assigned seats and arranged onto the electric blue plane seats. I’d always hated roller coasters and since this was my first time on an airplane, I had assumed they would resemble each other. My mom assured me it would be nothing to fear which eased my worry. The aircraft gained momentum as it bolted down the runway and became airborne. I felt relieved that it was nothing like an amusement park ride and

My brother and I had never seen real sea shells and found a beat up white, round, shell in the parking lot and were enthralled with it, but little did we know there would be many more cool shells closer to the ocean. I also had never seen a palm tree so it was a lot of fun to sit by the pool and be surrounded by these tropical trees. Then as the sun was setting, we hopped out of the chlorinated water and crossed a wooden bridge sprinkled with sand. There was the vast ocean, small tides crashing onto the sand. I had begun to run as fast as my short little legs could take me, closer and closer to where the water met the land. Scattered along the beach were beautiful shells and mounds of rust colored seaweed. We had stayed on that beach until the sun was no longer visible over the horizon and the only light was the stars. Then finally we retired back to our hotel where we slept after a long day of

Burnt, peeling skin slipped off my sun beaten arm. A salty tear dropped down my face, and I swallowed it, soaking in every bit of bitter liquid I could taste. I squinted, the sun capturing my green eyes at a glare. I reached over and grabbed my sunglasses, protecting my damaged eyes from the harmful UV rays. Suddenly, the world came into view.…

A few years ago, on a class trip, my friends had asked me to ride at least one roller coaster. It was not a large roller coaster, but it made me queasy just looking at it. I was confident that I would be able to go on and enjoy the experience. My confidence quickly evaporated when we began climbing up the roller coaster’s first hill. The ride dropped, and I was screaming so loudly that I could only hear myself.…

My friend, Odina, was laughing beside me the whole time; she did not know how worried and anxious I was about this devastating rollercoaster. It is called the Iron Rattler, and it stood at a height of one hundred-eighty feet tall. The other passengers were energized with excitement, anxiety, and fear. I felt uncomfortable getting on the rollercoaster because I thought I was going to die. I thought maybe the rollercoaster would fall…

Air travel is nowhere near comfortable. A message from Dr. Florence Thomson written in response to an article published in The British Medical Journal in 1953 was, “most passengers are quite unable to rest in comfort in the position allowed, and sleep is quite impossible except in very short snatches” (996). In 2016, nothing changed for the better in this regard; CNN recently published an article about the disruptive passengers in flights and incidents of air rage in airplanes (McKirdy). What did change significantly is what comes before boarding the airplane. It has been 15 years since that horrifying day in September 2001.…

I can smell the excitement in the air. The crimson and white colors on everyone, and some people have even painted their bodies. It is football season, finally. Tuscaloosa has been referred to as “The City Of Champions” because of The University Of Alabama’s sports teams--mainly football. In Tuscaloosa, we brag about the Southeastern Conference and the number of BCS National Championship titles the university holds.…

It is the morning of July 4th, 2008: I groan as my mother gently whispers, “teneshi yene mar (Get up honey)”. Struggling I open my eyes and notice the trembling cabin, I turn to my mother with a look of concern and she reaches out her hand and squeezes my own looking up at me, “we are going to be okay Mar”. A couple of moments later our plane has landed, we gather up our belongings and make our way towards the exit filled with people attached to their screens and MP3 players. The airport is filled with an undercurrent of anticipation, impatience, and boredom; bodies scramble back and forth from one gate to another. My mother, attempting to balance three children, clasps my hand, holds my little brother to her waist and calls back to my older…

Yesterday, I took my girls to Kings Island, something that has kept them well busy over the summer. I am not the one to ride rides let alone big roller coasters. I usually am the bag holder while I sit and wait when they jump from one ride to the next. Usually I stand off to the side or find an empty bench, pop out my phone and keep to myself. But I thought this time it would be the perfect opportunity to break the norm and allow me to complete this assignment.…

During the summer of 2014, my family and I enjoyed a vacation in one of the most beautiful place I have ever visited. My uncle had won a trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for the whole family and we were ecstatic to say the least. I remember looking at pictures of the unbelievable mansion we would be staying in called Casa China Blanca, but no picture captured how amazing it truly was. Although, the entire city was not as luxurious as our gated community, I still believe Puerto Vallarta is one of the most enjoyable places I have ever been to. Upon arrival, my family and I piled into the chaotic airport filled with hundreds of people.…

The sun beat down on us as we drew squares on the crumbled street and numbered them with the chalk we had stolen. We played lagoori with a pile of stones and a dirt-covered ball. Each day, our bodies grew, our minds expanded, the streets crumbled some more, but the chalk was always stolen and the stones were always free. My mother’s cold palm gently woke me.…

First of all, I got to visit a beach known as “Marieta Island.” Driving to this beach was about 3 hours, even though it was a long drive it was worth the wait. Once we arrived to the beach my father had told me that we are going to rent a boat to go visit Marieta Island. In order to get there, we would have to sail to the island. Once we got close to the island the man in charge of the boat told us to use a life jacket to swim there.…

When we got there, I was immediately in love with the beach. Time seemed to stop, and all I could take in was the cold of the water around my ankles, and the exciting fact that I was actually there. It was so beautiful, and I don’t think I've ever seen something so BIG! The way the waves jumped and leaped over each other was amazing. We all ran to the shore and I slowly dipped my toe into the water, smiled at my mom, and leaped into the the blue waves.…

There I was at the top, ready to take the leap of faith into the unknown. Below me was the calm yet mysterious water ushering me to come join in it in its vast beauty and wealth. From atop I had a masterful view over the water, but yet I saw little of what it had to offer. I had only scanned the surface of the water meaning I truly did not comprehend what was under the surface. While I stand there glancing at the water’s reflection I see a mirror image on the surface staring back at me.…

After the attendants strapped everyone in, they did their whole spiel on how we were going to have a great time, but the words muddled in my mind as I was more focused on breathing. The car moved onward and screeched at us as if in warning. Then suddenly the car stopped, I’m pretty sure just to spite us.…
