Obesity may not seem like a serious problem compared to some infectious disease, but it brings on a stream of health problems along with it. An over consumption of sugar can result in Type 2 diabetes, in which the body can’t produce enough insulin to balance out the body’s sugar intake. It can also lead to problems such as stroke, high blood pressure, high (bad) cholesterol, and a plethora of other deadly side effects (NHLBI, 2012). We can inch closer to eliminating obesity by providing healthy, nutritious meals in schools, and increasing active time outside (such as recess) for young students. These issues are clean water access and global hygiene measures, obesity, malaria, avian influenza, and the pollution of air. My target populations are all over the place, considering the vast differences between each issue. I hope to target each place around the world that does not have clean water access and build wells until everyone has enough to drink globally and no one has to go thirsty. In order to increase disease prevention in developing countries, we must place a high value on teaching the population about how to properly sanitize so that individuals that don’t know any better will not contaminate the clean drinking water. For the next issue, I am targeting all youth in order to teach the masses about how to prevent obesity and how to make good choices about staying healthy so that we nip the issue in its bud instead of having to reverse the consequences. Regarding avian influenza and malaria, my focus is about developing new drugs that can be affordable and readily available to anyone who may need to access them. Currently, there are certain exclusions such as pregnancy and deficiencies that disqualify individuals from being able to be treated. My goal is that with these funds we can research alternative drugs and more universal ways to cure infected patients.
